nienne: I'm pretty sure Singapore's homicide rates are low because they use the death penalty often. I think you can even be executed there for drug trafficking or possession. They don't mess around. There's no waiting 20 years for appeals either.

They got caning too. Which is like the death penalty but you're still alive.

Dman33: There is something wrong with our country and we need to fix it.

Damn right there is, but it's not guns. Old fart drives through a farmers market, where's the outcry for banning cars? It doesn't exist. Instead you get folks calling for better regulation of the drivers. Some kid gets into his parent's liquor and dies, you don't call for an alcohol ban (ok, some do, but they are generally called out as nutjobs), people want more education and oversight. All sorts of issues exist in this country, but for some reason when it comes to guns the folks that want to try and fix the underlying problems instead of focusing on the hardware are the crazy ones. Every where else the sane folks want more education and research into the cause, but here the only "sane" solution is to ban the tools.

/Ok, back to work.

Clinging to a utopian belief that making it illegal to own guns will stop criminal activity is idiotic... Criminals break laws by their very actions. Attempting to limit law-abiding citizens from their ability to defend themselves is absolute, purely criminal stupidity.

I don't know why this is so hard for people to understand.

Three streets actually, you need to take I-4 West also.

I think there's a quicker way, but that's only if you're in a hurry to die... in Florida of all places.

I-90 to I-75 to the Turnpike?

Can you swing by I-94 along the way and pick me up? I'm looking to get to Melbourne.

Because some people are naturally fearful of anything that shoots bullets and feel that denying everyone's rights to something magically solves a problem.

Because the criminally insane CARE if its illegal or not. How gawd damn dumb can people be?

Mrtraveler01: In other words, you're utopian belief that we will all be much safer if we have guns is pretty stupid in my opinion. It won't do much to curb the gun violence.

Utopian? No... Utopian would be no one having guns and we all live peacefully, going about our lives with no need for military, police or private weapons.

I'm speaking of cold, pure, nasty, mean reality.

That said, your proposed idea of everyone having guns HAS been tried out on a small scale...

Kennesaw, Georgia (new window)

Gun law
On May 1, 1982 the city passed an ordinance [Sec 34-1a] requiring every head of household to maintain a firearm together with ammunition. It was passed partly in response to a 1981 handgun ban in Morton Grove, Illinois. Kennesaw's law was amended in 1983 to exempt those who conscientiously object to owning a firearm, convicted felons, those who cannot afford a firearm, and those with a mental or physical disability that would prevent them from owning a firearm. It mentions no penalty for its violation. According to the Kennesaw Historical Society, no one has ever been charged under the ordinance, but it has still had the effect of reducing crime by at least 50%.

Yeah, just saying CCW isn't the "cure all" some would have us believe. My solution in that case would be to turn the country into Somalia; everyone is issued an AK-47, AR-15, etc.. and you're fined if you're not carrying it publicly.

I'm confident gun related violence would plummet.

Aside from the lone gunmen nonsense, Conservative groups tend to fly off the handle whenever a Democrat is in the White House. Seriously. The stats on the website do seem to provide good proof that it had some part in this.

What astounds me though is that these pro-gun folks support government intervention in whether I should own a gun or not. Who's the government to say whether or not I should own a gun. Isn't that what Glenn Beck has been telling me all these months?

So I followed the link. It goes to wiki, which references some guys mindspring page. The reasoning on the mindspring page goes - burglary (just burglary) went down so it was the gun ban that reduced crime (dude jumps back to all crimes.

The demographics of that town have radically changed over the past 27 years. Homicide nationwide is down 45% since 1981.

Guns are awesome, but they aren't fixing crime.

The irony is that you guys support government intervention which is one of the key things Conservatives are against.

Of course I realize they only support government intervention only when it suits them but I still like the irony none the less.
