Cyberluddite: But supporting the right of everyone to have guns isn't the same as saying that it would be smart for everyone to carry a boom stick around at all times. Anybody who thinks that it really would reduce gun violence for everyone to walk around with a gun is something of a tard. In fact, we kinda tried that about 140 years ago here out west, and it wasn't exactly known as a time of peace and nonviolence. Quite the opposite, in fact--unless all those gravestones in the old west Boot Hill graveyards are fake.

Gun cultures are inherently healthy. It's more than simply carrying. It's also comfort with a weapon, training, safety and knowledge. I carry a Ruger P90 and I can promise you I will do everything in my power to prevent a shooting like this one.
Now if you want to talk about a culture where civilians are not allowed to carry weapons, I'd encourage you to visit Mexico.

Well, gun laws or not, things like this will happen. America loves guns, we are all about it. The only countries with higher gun related homicides than the US are Columbia, Paraguay, Guatemala, Zimbabwe, Mexico, Costa Rica, Belarus and Barbados. The difference is that the United States is the only 1st world country on the list.

The question is not whether or not we should limit guns. There are countries with higher overall homicide rates which are not related to guns. The question is why are Americans so homicidal? Yes, there will always be crime, but the crime rates do not have to be so high.

CCW or not, gun deaths will happen in America. We are just homicidal mofos.

I am SO grateful that when i was laid off in August I was treated professionally. I got a week and a half's notice, time enough to close all my tickets. My colleagues took me to lunch my last day, and i was able to wander around my last couple hours making my goodbyes. No walkout. I just locked up my cabinets, left the key on someone's desk, and got on the bus.

Tell you what troll, you get a list of all the large churches that advocate murder and all the people that followed through, and the body count that resulted.

In the mean time, I'll post a list of all the large mosques that advocate murder and all the islamofacists that followed through and the body count that resulted.

Any bets on who's list is longer?

Hint: Your list is going to be

Nogale: Are they required to undergo firearms training and regular practice? I'd think that having an armed, but untrained, population would be a recipe for disaster.

Training, yes. Practice, not sure. It's been a while since I checked into it. Most gun owners really do take that stuff seriously though. I take that back, most folks who carry take it seriously, and will make sure they train themselves. All of them that I know (including myself) are better trained to handle firearms than most cops.

Interesting (to me) anecdote: I was talking to a couple of friends of mine a while ago about carrying guns. One is a guy that is not completely ant-gun, the other had just completed her police training. I asked him who he trusts more to carry a firearm, and he said that he trusts her over me, on the basis that she's a cop, so she must be trustworthy, right? I then asked her to describe the firearms training she had received. Turns out, I had had the same level of training by the time I was 16, and before she entered the academy she had never even touched a gun. Yet she should be trusted implicitly, and I shouldn't be near a gun.

/Not bashing cops at all, just saying that it's not a safe assumption that gun owners are untrained.

Lollerwaffle: Does this huge influx of violence scare the shiat out of anybody else in our country? I am only 21. I don't know if it was like this when older generations were growing up. Perhaps it was, but just not widespreadly reported because they didnt run news 24-7 back then. Either way, it's a big issue, and I can't grasp why we aren't getting psych type people in schools to teach our kids nonviolent conflict resolution, and doing everything we farking can to figure out what makes people do these awful things and find a way to fix it. We have computers and unmanned drones and MRI machines and a pill for every farking ailment. Why is stopping humans from killing eachother so low on the list? We're supposed to be a country of innovators. Surely this violence can be stopped, slowed, or at least dampened, some how some way.

You don't know if it was like this when older generations were growing up? I'll let you in on a secret: it's always been like this. Don't crap your pants every time something bad happens around the world.

No no no, haven't you been paying attention? You don't try to work out the why when it comes to violent people, you make guns illegal! That fixes the problem. Well, it doesn't, but it will. We just need to find a big enough gun control stick.

cameroncrazy1984: Or England, that den of violence.

Ever read Guns and Violence? An excellent book that explores the English-U.S. contrast. In her book, she looks at the history of British gun law and found that, historically, gun crime rose as legal gun ownership declined.
