$27,000 = $3,940.00 in 1965 (according to US Inflation Calculator (new window))

The van isn't so much depreciation proof as it is inflation proof.

Anyone have any idea what the original retail was?

Came here to say this. I'd hate to be the original owner of the van. He'll have to buy it back at auction from the insurance agency, if he wants it back.

Prolly around $2k new. My dad paid $3700 after tax for a brand new '65 Porsche 356c in July '65. The cost included a dealer added AC unit.

Seems like a pretty petty thing to become a serial killer over.

My 67 splitty was the same color... Bought through the mail in 1987 and drove back from Oregon to Vermont. We all have vehicles we regret selling*, this is one of mine. Now my wife wants one, and here in New Zealand they're worth a pile of money.

What I want to know is how the vehicle has been around 35 years without being registered? If it's been in storage and if an innocent party was the last "owner", why they didn't run the numbers before dumping many thousands into the resto? I would never spend a dime on a secondhand vehicle until I had at least found out if there were outstanding tickets or liens on it.
