Gwynplaine: It's the flu, it sucks and it will kill a few people, sometimes seemingly predominately healthy people, just like it always has, just like it always will.

Some strains of flu cause a cytokine storm, so that the stronger your immune system, the more likely you are to die. These strains kill mainly healthy young adults.

These type of comments confuse me.

Kos is an open forum. You could go sign up right now and start writing your own diaries and change Kos to be whatever you feel like. And then "one of those commie bastards" could be a BullMoose party supporter or something. They don't seem to drop the banhammer there nearly as often as the right winger sites which do mass bannings for things like supporting Guiliani in the primary.

Or I could stay on Fark, make a semi-lame joke and see if anyone confuses it for troll bait and bites

Prank Call of Cthulhu: MDGeist: Could some one please explain to me why this H1N1 thing is such a big deal?

Because the mortality rate for seasonal flu is like 0.1%, and H1N1's mortality rate could potentially be triple that. Oh noes!!! That's 0.3%. That's as many as three thousandths. And that's terrible.

I admire any thread that gets a guy named Cthulhu replying to a guy from Ipswich, Mass.

Four of my five kids have had H1N1. All recovered without any problem...at least that's what we thought.

I spent most of yesterday at the doctor's office. My youngest has pneumonia....a complication from H1N1. He's really sick. He's on a powerful antibiotic as well as breathing treatments. And he still may end up hospitalized. He has no other health problems and rarely gets sick. It can be a very big deal.

Because they look at suffering as an opportunity for profit-making. And not in a good way, like trying to minimize suffering while making a profit. More like Corn Laws suffering.

YES YES GODDAMMIT I KNOW VIRUSES ARE NOT TREATED WITH ANTIBIOTICS. I'M TALKING ABOUT THE SECONDARY BACTERIAL INFECTIONS THAT TAKE HOLD WHILE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM IS FIGHTING THE FLU VIRUS.

No problem. Yeah I remember when I realized it; it really pissed me off. I mean there are about 10 million sites on the internet that I can get a biased view of something, I just wanted ONE site where I can find out the truth without someone's personal opinions thrown in, and snopes just couldn't resist. Factcheck is pretty good. If politics isn't involved, snopes still has a larger library of urban legends, although the pop up ads really get to me too.

Pick up a book on the "Spanish" flu of 1918. It was a variant of H1N1. Good times. I recall one story typical of the infection. 26 year old nurse in good health shows up for work. At noon she is feeling a little under the weather. At 5 pm she is dead.

That was obviously a more aggressive strain, but you get the idea. The flu virus can mutate, and if it mutates closer to where it was then the Reaper will have to take on seasonal helpers.

As much as I disagree with this, I would say that there are hundreds of people at these companies, under the age of 24 (straight from the elite liberal colleges/universities), who are working 80-100 hours a week, which would put them at even higher risk for catching swine flu.

So yes, DailyKOS, there are probably hundreds of people in the "high-risk" category. Maybe you should actually check some numbers/know something about these companies before making stupid statements.
