I wish they had an annoying monotone voiceover. The ones here blast people getting all excited over nothing, and you have no choice but to listen while waiting for the light to change.

They're no problem here in Philly. Sure if one of them changes to red or blue then I'll jump and look over my shoulder for a cop car, but the boards aren't bright at all, not nearly enough to be distracting.

LA resident here. Some background -- former LA City Attorney Rocky Delgadillo (the guy who negotiated the settlement being struck down here) was elected by the billboard companies...this deal was negotiated by him. The arrangement basically was, "Hey, billboard companies, if you take down some of the brazillion billboards you put up and we ignored, we'll let you put up a few of those incredibly distracting digital billboards you've been wanting." The legality of this deal was always dubious, like much of what Delgadillo did.

This is the same guy who let his wife drive a city SUV (a Yukon or somesuch) in violation of city regulations -- she smashed it up in a single car accident and he had it fixed on the city's dime...

I think they look a lot better than some some old, faded standard billboard, as long as they're maintained properly. When sections of them start wearing out they're going to be the worst kind of eyesore.

On a road without streetlights (like the one near my house) they are bright as hell depending on the advertisement. Worse than a driver coming at you with high beams. Not to mention they light up the surrounding houses with epileptic seizure triggering messages all night long.

Wouldn't be a problem if they installed a photosensitive dimmer though.

This was my first thought too. I'm not into the green movement at all, but this just seems gratuitously wasteful.

But then, I assume Clear Channel is the one who would have to pay the electric bill, taking money out of their pocket... so I'm torn.

I liked the billboards in Earth: Final Conflict

For the young-uns: The billboards were positioned above the roadway. The signs were animated, and spaced close enough so that it looked somewhat like a continual modern day animated banner ad in the top of your windshield.

Well, I liked it in the show. I would get very stabby if this happened for real in my lifetime.
