yeah it's one of my go-to background albums. although browsing through your list, that might be replaced by martin medeski and wood pretty soon. i also saw grizzly bear when they came through chicago a while back and highly recommend it. they didn't drop any of the layers for the live show.

Because I'm completely unfamiliar with her works.

Heard of all three.

I don't have enough brown and grey "vintage" clothing to listen to Neko Case.

you should check her out, either solo or with the new pornographers - she's been kicking around for at least a decade.

I seriously had no clue who she was. However, given what you and truth_is_stranger_than_fishin have listed as some of your "best of 2009 releases," I'll give her a listen. Sonic Youth, Leonard Cohen, and The Flaming Lips are at the top of my '09 new releases list. For the record, U2's new disc is not.

the only song i've heard off of the new flaming lips is the one with karen oh, and i'm not sure what to think - how's the rest? also, i highly recommend "the dark night of the soul" by dangermouse and sparklehorse.

It's a solid release; it took me a couple of listens before I really appreciated it. It's worth procuring.

And I will look into The Dark Night of the Soul.

I haven't listened to Neko Case in a while. Now I have a new album to listen to.

2009-11-05 11:44:20 PM
48, and heard of all three mentioned in TFA.

And may I put in a good word for St. Vincent's (Annie Clark) "Actor" album?

2009-11-05 11:48:07 PM
Haven't listened to Neko Case in a long time. Perhaps I should check it out.

2009-11-05 11:48:46 PM
how about the new Broadcast album?

2009-11-05 11:50:34 PM
Perhaps I also should have just read Mobkey's comment and either simply said "this". Jesus, that was weird.

2009-11-05 11:53:12 PM
And to make matters worse, the word "either" randomly appeared in that post. The Faildome, I have entered it.

Wow, I have actually heard of her, seen her live, and like this album. Maybe I am a music snob after all.

Necco wafers aren't good.

In the main, this year has been about the reissue and the music that I was either not alive for or was too young to fully appreciate This, this, and this (all new windows) have been the three titles I've listened to the most and enjoyed out of all of the collections of songs I've listened to this year.

Out of the new albums I've listened to this year (and I'll cop up front to missing a lot that I'll be giving initial listens to in my life to come), these are the ones I think will stand the test of time qualitatively:

Clint Mansell - "Moon" (original motion picture soundtrack score)

dinosaur jr. farm (new window)

steve martin the crow: new songs for the 12 string bango (new window)

animal collective merriweather post pavilion (new window)

mumford & sons sigh no more (new window)

ha ha tonka novel sounds of the nouveau south (new window)

yeah yeah yeahs it's blitz! (new window)

super furry animals dark days/light years (new window)

harlem shakes technicolor health (new window)

doves kingdoms of rust (new window)
eels hombre lobo: 12 songs of desire (new window)

sonic youth the eternal (new window)

the xx the xx (new window)

m.ward hold time (new window)

the silversun pickups swoon (new window)

pj harvey & john parish a man a woman walked by (new window) (expletives forthcoming)

yonlu a society in which no tear is shed is inconceivably mediocre (new window)

anya marina slow & steady seduction: phase II (new window)

placebo battle for the sun (new window)

jarvis cocker further complications (new window)

dent may and his magnificent ukulele the good feeling music of dent may & his magnificent ukulele (new window)

spinnerette eponymous (new window)

wilco wilco (the album)k (new window)

soap&skin lovetune for vacuum (new window)

fight like apes fight like apes and the mystery of the golden medallion (new window)

eleni mandell artificial fire (new window)

antony & the johnsons the crying light (new window)

laura gibson beasts of seasons (new window)

mos def the ecstatic (new window)

bob dylan together through life (new window)

If I could, I'd retroactively place "Middle Cyclone" on my list. It's too bad she's not playing anywhere within 300 miles of my present base of operations on her present tour, as I'd be first on line for a ticket.

2009-11-06 01:00:07 AM
Her album definitely wins "dumbest album cover of the year".

She's on a muscle car with a sword! LOL so random!

Fark used to be a good place to check out/hear tunes from new musicians or ones I hadn't listened to before. Now it's a joke. Most are either obvious troll threads or from Contact Music.

Prefer the old Neko stuff compared to her new album, but it's still good. Great voice that's for sure.

Oh well, I guess it will be feed the troll threads until the next time...

I don't say this with any pride (nor conversely any shame), but I honestly have not heard of her.

Seriously though, I think this is, ironically, a result of the internet. No one listens to radio or watches MTV anymore for music. We get habituated to certain sites with a bias (like say, classic rock), and to a certain circle of friends. Once you find a certain group of people, music outside your/their interest is filtered out.

Which, in a way is sad... but in a way is awesome because, well, listening to music you don't like sucks massive balls.

I have all of Neko's albums, bought the new one on the day it came out, and have have seen her perform five times. That must be unheard of.

Jets Overhead - "No Nations"
The Wailin' Jennys - Live at Montreaux

dholway: Neko and Triumph the Insult Comic Dog (new window)

I like Neko Case, but I could smell B.O. from watching that video. Very strange.

/I'm clean.

I'm getting lazy about acquiring new music, but the only two things I've listened to a lot this year are Phoenix and Japandroids.

And as much as it makes me feel like a hipster douche, I'm really loving that Sleigh Bells song. (new window) That shiat is going to be Paper Planes 2009.

Neko's latest album was awesome and is definitely one of my favorite albums of the year along with:

The Decemberists - The Hazards of Love
Tinted Windows - Tinted Windows
Regina Spektor - Far
Death - ...For The Whole World To See (Discovered because of Fark! Thanks!)

PickinWhiskers: Neko Case is good.
Necco wafers aren't good.

NPR's Wait Wait Don't Tell Me explored this very topic with her back in July...

It was hilarious.

Neko is a very nice person who has a voice so pretty I refuse to sing along with her cause I don't wanna ruin it.

You, sir, have great taste in music.

I have a question. I own every David Gray album through A New Day At Midnight, and I love them all. However, whatever I heard after that record bored the crap out of me. What's the new record like? Can you expand on your recommendation?

2009-11-06 08:27:33 AM
I have heard of Neko Case but I'm pretty underwhelmed by her. She's good, has a lovely voice but I just don't get a spark from her. I'd rather hear Gillian Welch. Link (new window) form her first album, don't think she's dropped anything for a while

2009-11-06 08:34:55 AM
I love Neko, but I was a bit underwhelmed with the last album. Maybe I need to listen to it more. My favorites so far this year have been Wilco (The Album), Hospice by The Antlers, Bonfires On The Heath by The Clientele, Merriweather Post Pavilion by Animal Collective, and Hazards of Love by The Decemberists. Also, Visiter by the Dodos is good, but I think that is from last year.

2009-11-06 08:55:53 AM
I have only heard of her because she's among the "six artists that intercall lounge is/was featuring. Enjoy the music while you wait for your conference call to begin."

/zzzzZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
//would rather have dethklok on the wait music rotation
