GanjSmokr: Marla Singer's Laundry: especially the part where I said it was a joke.

And where was that exactly? Here?

Marla Singer's Laundry: (how was that?)

Yea, that's not really saying it's a joke. How about this.... you thought you were telling a joke when in reality you were just being a dumbass.

Actually that clearly indicates she isn't serious. It is why you cut it out the first time you quoted her dumbass.

itazurakko: CitizenTed: Go live in the UK, watch the BBC news on TV, then come back home and watch CNN or Fox. It's like day and night. It's not even a contest. American broadcast news is pathetic.

Hell, stay home in the US and listen to the BBC World Service on the radio, you'll notice the same thing. Their normal interviewers aren't afraid to ask uncomfortable questions either, which is a large part of the charm.

demonfaerie: I can see that and at least they give out cards to help, but do they go further to say it is not a weakness to get help?

Dunno about the military itself, but even living in a non-military town our public bus system has ads inside showing a soldier in front of a flag with a big message about how it's actually the STRONG thing to do to reach out for help, if you or a relative who served is having problems adjusting please call this number, etc etc.

Wow that is good, that in your town it does that. Does the ad say where it comes from like the military itself or some third party for the military or a party wanting to help this since the military doesn't do enough. I get really mixed messages on what is being done by who and all that jazz.

For all the people wailing on Marla_Singers_Laundry's post re the armed people, i think it still rasises a valid question.

After Virginia Tech, everyone was saying how they should let college student walk around packing conceled heat...why the hell would you want to let COLLEGE kids carry when apparently you don't even trust the ARMY to carry on their own base???

This ain't the time or the place.

Which is a funny thing to say, in some ways, because apparently any given Virginia Tech thread was a perfectly good place for people to push their agenda (whichever side it was).

FilmBELOH20: Reynald: whoever this was had to not only show ID at the gate, but have DoD decals on their car to get in without a vehicle search. My guess not terrorists but disaffected soldiers (fwiw). Ft Hood was my last duty station a year ago, so this hits close to home.

When I was at Hood - granted it was '93 - the main gate didn't have security - you could just drive on. Has that changed? Plus, there are any number of ways to get on post without using the gate. It's kind of a big place if I remember right. Hell - a guy could take a boat from one side of lake Belton (IIRC) and be over at the MWR docks inside of 10 minutes, no?

Changed, as of 2001. Identification required, at least when I went

puffy999: lawrnk: Stupid dumb ass subby, only MP's typically are armed on base

Given the headline, I don't understand why subby has so much scorn. Technically, he doesn't say anything about "all" members of the military on-base being armed, he says "qualified people with guns nearby."

Because there are former soldiers and military fetishists on the internet who cannot rest if there's a chance to display their superior intelligence on all things military. Seriously, if someone were to describe a gun and get the clip size wrong, he'd have an office space like scenario going on where people would keep coming and correcting him, even though they could clearly see that others had done so, just because they need to show they know.

WalMartian: Unfortunately, Hood is one of the easier ones to get onto.

Unless this was a shooting perpetrated by solders or former soldiers (would that make them disgruntled?) I would have surmised as much. Otherwise, we'd be hearing how a bunch of civilian gate guards were killed. (That, too, depends on the base. Lots of the smaller bases use rent-a-cops for gate guards.)

Wrong question. The one we need to ask is:

Why aren't our troops, trained and trusted on the battlefield, allowed to carry on base?

MPOM

I fail to understand why any of the other possibilities at this point are that much smarter and safer bets. It's 2009, not 1995.

For the same reason you're more likely to get killed by a family member. Them's just the odds plus a dash of common sense.

2009-11-05 04:39:16 PM

vygramul: Depends a lot on the local base commander. I can walk on base without being challenged at some places, but at others I can't even get in with a CAC card and orders unless there's also a base pass waiting for me and an additional base pass arranged for my car.

I visited a US base in Italy this past spring (to visit a relative stationed there) and my relative had to sponsor me, I filled out a paper form, a bunch of people signed it. EVERY damn time I wanted in the gate, even if I was a passenger in his car (with the sticker) and him driving, I had to show that piece of paper AND my passport, which they would scrutinize like crazy and ask me some personal question like my birthplace or where it was issued.

Hilarious part though is that coming in the airport in Rome, the immigration guy didn't even ask me to show my passport at ALL and just waved me in. I didn't get a stamp or anything. And I certainly don't look Italian.

I guess I just don't look dangerous, either.

I was stationed there for 8 years. Holy crap. It is a big place, but CNN suggesting it takes 40 minutes to get from one end to the other only applies if you're driving through the training areas. From one end of the garrison to the other is about 6 miles I believe.

Sad. I have a lot of actually good memories of that place.
