From AP via the WSJ site (emphasis mine):

Associated Press
WASHINGTON -- Seven people were killed and 20 wounded in a pair of shootings Thursday at the Fort Hood Army base in Texas, the Army said.

An army spokesman in Washington said the base has been locked down following the shootings. Another official told the Associated Press that at least one shooter had been caught.

The FBI is sending agents to the scene.

Army spokesman Lt. Col. Nathan Banks said the first shooting began at about 1:30 p.m. at a personnel and medical-processing office. The facility, called a Soldier Rating and Processing center, handles administrative details for soldiers.
Col. Banks said two shooters were apparently involved. There was no immediate word on who they were, nor on identities of the dead.

Col. Banks said the second incident took place at a theater on the sprawling base.
Another Army official identified that site as the Howze Theater.

That official, who requested anonymity to discuss an evolving incident, said a graduation had been scheduled for 2 p.m. at the theater.

Hell, stay home in the US and listen to the BBC World Service on the radio, you'll notice the same thing. Their normal interviewers aren't afraid to ask uncomfortable questions either, which is a large part of the charm.

The BBC has a number of podcasts, too. I listen to the two daily Global News podcasts and really enjoy them.

Weaver95: what_now: Thanks for the responses guys...I guess there really is no security?

depends - there's a lot of security in some areas, like the ranges and testing areas. But some places are lucky if they see a security patrol once a week.

Depends a lot on the local base commander. I can walk on base without being challenged at some places, but at others I can't even get in with a CAC card and orders unless there's also a base pass waiting for me and an additional base pass arranged for my car.

Wild speculation for the day: the shooters are anarchists inspired by V for Vendetta. No reports have mentioned Guy Fawkes masks because American journalists don't know who Guy Fawkes was, and they hate to expose their ignorance. Bomb sniffing dogs should immediately start searching for gunpowder at the U.S. Congress building.

And, Betacammon, yes, our soldiers are trained for urban combat. They are not trained for SWAT missions. There may be similarities, but the two missions are not identical.

Stryyder: Jonesy Boogieman: Stryyder: Jonesy Boogieman: CNN
At least seven people are dead and as many as 20 are wounded, CNN affiliate KXXV reported, citing a Fort Hood spokesman. One person is in custody in connection with the incident, it said.

One attacker has been "neutralized" and one has been "cornered," Lt. Gen Russel Honore, former deputy commander at Fort Hood, told CNN.

So Jihadist over the mexico border hitting a relatively soft target hoping the PR aspect of shooting up an army base is my guess...

I'm not familiar with Ft. Hood's location regarding the border, but you reminded me of a skit that, IIRC, was about terrorists being catapulted over the border into the US from Mexico with AK-47's. Anyways, I hope your guess isn't correct! If they could pull that off, they could do worse!

Remember the Clancy Novel wher they radomly hit a bunch of malls with uzi's

I haven't read that novel. See, what gets me is, for example, according to a retired Coast Guard acquaintance of mine only a minority of shipping containers are searched thoroughly so as to not delay things too much and cost much more (but that was a few years ago now, things might have improved since). So, if 3 guys can pull off your concern, or Clancy's, then worse can happen in a similar way.

For all the people wailing on Marla_Singers_Laundry's post re the armed people, i think it still rasises a valid question.

After Virginia Tech, everyone was saying how they should let college student walk around packing conceled heat...why the hell would you want to let COLLEGE kids carry when apparently you don't even trust the ARMY to carry on their own base???

Alien Robot: shroom: But I thought shootings never happened amongst a well-armed population?

Military bases operate under the "federal facilities" rules where guns are not allowed except to on-duty LEOs or to soldiers on the range. So yes, this was in a relatively unarmed location. The percentage of people carrying guns in Waco is far higher than on Fort Hood.

Given the headline, I don't understand why subby has so much scorn. Technically, he doesn't say anything about "all" members of the military on-base being armed, he says "qualified people with guns nearby."
