MorrisBird: I just got off the phone with my youngest. He had just left the building where the shooting occurred right before it happened. He's now on guard duty at the barracks. He says there's a lot of rumors, but nobody really knows what happened.

I'm glad your kid's ok.

MSNBC has Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchinson saying she has been told 30 wounded. A news conference is to come in 10-20 minutes.

The only bases place we carried live and armed were SAC flight lines. Occasionally in the states and all times at Misawa and Chitose. Oh, M2 Carbines.
This was 1952-55 can't vouch for later years.

2009-11-05 04:17:42 PM
To anyone familiar with this base, have they outsourced their security to private contractors like some other bases have?

The last time I drove onto Vandenberg here in Cali, they had replaced real soldiers with rent-a-cops manning the front gates. We had a question about a location on base, and it was obvious the "guard" had never ventured in further than the front driveway.

Police surrounded the 42006 building, said to be used for traumatic brain injuries, on Fort Hood and fired shots at a male suspect in an Army uniform with a Major rank.

(emphasis mine)

Wow, that makes it even more interesting.

I read that as : male suspect in an Army uniform with a Major rack.

oddly though, we share the same response.....

Thanks to CNN, I now have a detailed understanding of the sign at the entrance to Ft. Hood.

Thanks, CNN!

DempseySR26: Haven't read all the post yet but....Soldiers and Marines on base don't carry around weapons, only the MP's do. All the weapons are locked up in the armory and paper work has to be done to withdraw a weapon for training. That goes for personal fire arms depending at least in 29 palms.

So gonna go with either Jihad, or crazy libs angry about last nights elections.

The deranged lib sound slike a long-shot. My old man is a retired USMC Col. and your right, I don't remember seeing very many weapons except at guard points when I was on base. You can bet there will be more concealed carries after this, or you would hope so.

I wish there were more people allowed to conceal - shooters would be stopped in their tracks a hell of a lot more often.

2009-11-05 04:18:21 PM
The hell? I also have family that live in Killeen but it's highly unlikely any of them were at the base. TFA mentioned that there's a graduation going on so it's possible that people snuck in w/out security checks w/ weapons, should this be an attack.

/Grandfather was stationed there from the 50s through 70s

2009-11-05 04:18:22 PM
Call from what sounds like a civilian at Fort Hood on Fox News.

they're on lockdown (obviously) and there's very little info on base.

How the fark does this happen on a huge military base in this country. We need to start taking security seriously. What a joke.

Alacritous: really? So "Oh no! we're under attack! everybody HIDE!"

Kind of Ironic for a military base, isn't it?

Actually, it keeps things from spiraling out of control. Since this is an attack on a base not in a warzone, they will limit armed action to the MPs/Police/FBI. If this had happened in a warzone, then the entire base would probably be armed and involved in finding these guys.

I'd hold skepticism to any reported anything (of significance/detail) on an immediate event for about 4 hours. Especially something like rank that someone from the press might have seen the guy get hauled in and assume improperly.

I've heard from 6-8 dead, from 8-15 wounded. That's a big difference all around.

For someone to just assume major because he was a pvt 1st class or something, I'm sure it can happen.
