Marla Singer's Laundry: FilmBELOH20: Marla Singer's Laundry: If this wasn't a God-hating gun-free zone, this wouldn't have happened!

(how was that?)

Actually, when soldiers come in from the field, they have to take the firearms to the armorer and lock them up. Soldiers in barracks are not allowed privately owned firearms, so, basically, you are correct - it is a gun free zone. You may now join SUBMITTARD on the short bus.

Are you drinking lead out of a bucket? IT'S A JOKE.

Are all gun-nuts this obtuse?

Some people have no sense of humor when it comes to their personal passions. Some of them would have no problem making a comment about using a gun to resolve something and then saying people are overreacting if they don't take it as a joke.

Police surrounded the 42006 building, said to be used for traumatic brain injuries, on Fort Hood and fired shots at a male suspect in an Army uniform with a Major rank.

EchoDork: Remember, Republicans: Having an armed populace prevents violence. Right? RIGHT?

I thought this wouldn't happen if citizens were permitted to carry.

Weapons are locked up on base and troops are not allowed to carry concealed or possess their own guns in the barracks, but don't let that stop you from creaming your shorts over our troops getting murdered.

AirForceVet: KCNE in Killeen is reporting 3 shooters, 7 dead, 20 wounded presently. One suspect in custody. Post in lockdown to find the two shooters on the loose.

3 actual shooters then? Damn.

Incidentally there's a pretty good book out about the Luby's massacre written by a survivor. Hearing "Killeen" it's the first thing I thought of, which is kinda too bad for the people of that town, now that I consider it :|

zena: No. There is security. Fort Hood is a huge post. There are several gates. There are MPs (or the rent-a-cops) at every gate. You have to have the decal and an ID. If you don't, you go through a screening process at the visitor's center. It's secure.

It's almost the size of Rhode Island. I can't even find an aerial view that includes all the training areas.

"Secure" is a very loose term.

I'm still slightly sceptical on the more-than-one-shooter reports; could be the usual confusion of on-going situations like this.

Could be someone on-post shot back at the original shooter (I know there are regs against personal firearms on post, but regs are broken sometimes).

If it is more than one shooter (jilted lover, religious fanatic, or disgruntled whatever), this is very ugly. That would likely mean domestic extremists, or foreign terrorists.

Hope it is wrapped up tight with no further losses.

ranak: If this is a terrorist attack, what better place to pull it off?

I mean, as has been stated, all weapons are stored in the armory except for line folks, MP's, etc. So, easy targets. And the last place you'd expect an attack of this kind is on a military base.

All you need after that are the right credentials to get on the base without being searched.

what_now: Thanks for the responses guys...I guess there really is no security?

There's enough security to impress the average civilian, to the point where a gang of teenagers looking to vandalize something would be deterred. But the problem is, when you're dealing with a large post- and Hood's the largest in the Army (maybe in all of DoD)- you've basically got a fully functioning city inside. Some of the people who live in that city work outside of it, and some of the people who work at that city don't live in it.

To truly, 100% secure a post, you'd need to have a situation where every Soldier lived on the post, and very few of the spouses had jobs in the civilian community. Otherwise, the sheer number of people who pass through the gates on a daily basis means you've got to make some tradeoffs.

I was stationed at Ft. Benning on 9/11. When full security measures (FPCON Delta) were put into place, they were exceptionally thorough. It was also common for off-post personnel to have to wait in line over 6 hours to get on post.

Army base is a relatively soft target for the first 10 minutes of an attack your screwed however once the word gets out.

PanicMan: demonfaerie: Yes either by soldiers to afraid to go get help or the military trying to deny it cause it will show how messed up the war is. Usually the reason why soldiers are proud to get help is probably cause they know what the military thinks of it, and probably seen friends get screwed over.

This is something I could debate at length, but the short story is the Army is seriously trying to get better about PTSD. But it's a major cultural change, and isn't going as fast as anyone would like.

They claim they are doing more to prevent ptsd, but if they are actually doing what they are claiming I have no idea. Got to ask Bob Woodruff on that one.

Haven't read all the post yet but....Soldiers and Marines on base don't carry around weapons, only the MP's do. All the weapons are locked up in the armory and paper work has to be done to withdraw a weapon for training. That goes for personal fire arms depending at least in 29 palms.

So gonna go with either Jihad, or crazy libs angry about last nights elections.

"All Military"

The situation at Ford Hood is obviously extremely sketchy. But I wanted to flag a late report from MSNBC's Pete Williams suggesting that initial reports from within the Pentagon say the incident appears to be "all military," i.e., the victims are military but apparently the assailants are too.

I want to be very clear. There is nothing confirmed about this. This a reporter getting initial and unofficial reports from within the Pentagon. But authorities on the base do have one shooter in custody. So presumably military officials know who that person is and are drawing inferences based on that.
