what_now: How do you get on an Army base if you aren't in the Army?

/real question

A lot of ways, through the front gate:

Interview
Friend Sponsor
Golf tournament
Lots of civilians work on base
There are colleges on bases too that let civilians in

You can be a civilian employee with a DOD badge.

You can be a retired military or DOD with a retiree badge.

You can get someone on the base to come in and sign you in at the gate as a visitor.

Those are the official ways. The unofficial ways, of course, involve sneaking in under a fence, coming in the trunk of a car, or having a fake ID.

Go to the visitor's center, show 'em a driver's license and proof of insurance, and give a reason you need to go on base (like "having lunch with my friend Larry.")

Gonz: FilmBELOH20: When I was at Hood - granted it was '93 - the main gate didn't have security - you could just drive on. Has that changed?

I assure you it did... probably around 8:30 AM local time on September 11th, 2001.

SRP area? You're not armed when you SRP. You're doing stuff like filling out paperwork and getting shots. I won't speculate on this any further...

Army base is a relatively soft target for the first 10 minutes of an attack your screwed however once the word gets out.

what_now:How do you get on an Army base if you aren't in the Army?

It depends on the post and the current level of security. If you're military or work for the DoD, you have an ID and a tag on your car. The gate card either waves you through or salutes if you have a blue sticker. If you're visiting, you usually have to go through a visitors center where they issue you a temporary pass. You have to have a reason.

There used to be "open posts"...not sure if those even exist anymore.

(A) Disgruntled Army soldiers;
(B) Domestic terrorists;
(C) Foreign terrorists; or
(D) Military dependents?

I am going to go with A. There has been a lot of media about how the military isn't taking care soldiers with ptsd or watching out for signs it or just finding excuses to kick them out. Think I saw it on Dateline or 20/20.

Agreed. If this is a PTSD event, there will be questions. PTSD is the under reported injury of this war.

If this is a terrorist attack, what better place to pull it off?

I mean, as has been stated, all weapons are stored in the armory except for line folks, MP's, etc. So, easy targets. And the last place you'd expect an attack of this kind is on a military base.

All you need after that are the right credentials to get on the base without being searched.

This is going to sound really cynical (I know, on Fark of all places), but hopefully these are just disgruntled military personnel so this all just blows over. If this was done by anybody foreign (drug lords, terrorists, etc.) we will never hear the end of it and it is going to force the government to spend a lot of money "reprimanding" the proper parties. With any luck, it was just some private pyle types and everyone forgets about this by the end of the week.

Shockingly, most people are unaware that soldiers and weapons are kept FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR away from ammunition until they are on a range, or in combat.

The intent is to prevent incidents like this. Or that time I had to dump 500 rounds of 7.62mm in the dumpster from the 240C because we forgot it in the Bradley after gunnery.

And not sure who asked about getting on to the base, this is one of the largest bases in the world. It is probably fairly porous if you actually wanted to get in.

Listening to the scanner now...local PD is pissed that they dont know what is going on.
