WTF? If the father was indeed in a "drunken stupor", why did the police leave the children with him? If the kids got injured or killed after wandering off the second time, I would place part of the blame on the police for leaving them with someone that obviously was in no condition to take care of children.

How could they have seen that coming?

This is too normal for Fark... the story needed to end with the Faather wandering and the toddlers passed out drunk by the time CPS arrived.

"Clearly, you have enough money to buy alcohol," she said.

The only thing I can think is he wasn't that drunk the first time they made contact and he was able to convince the officer(s) that he would straighten up any fly right. "Really tired, had a long day, didn't even finish one beer when I nodded off, officer. I swear it won't happen again." So the officers put in a non-emergency call to CPS and left. Then dad went back to the bottle and resumed drinking. "Drunken stupor" didn't come into play until the second visit.

Yes, just what the world needs, CPS to get "tougher."

One time CPS called me out on a removal. Said the parents had "drugs" out during the interview. Sounded sketchy. I get there, and all I see is an ashtray full of hand rolled cigarette butts. The CPS CM thought it was weed. So what do we do? Well, you've got 3 state agencies out there (CPS, "my people," and the cops), so we took the kid anyway. The CM said something about the house being dirty. It was pretty dirty, but what house with kids isn't.

I really don't get this. I don't even drink (maybe one or two) if my kid is asleep and I'm the only caregiver. What if the kid went into distress and I was passed out and not waking up to her cries? I can't even believe getting drunk to the point of being in stupor when looking after children, of any age!

Basically what I said in the article. I remove kids for CPS. I'm there with the screaming families, CPS, and the cops as we rip children out of their parents' arms because they failed drug tests, or because some busybody accuses the family of being drug dealers or DV. I'm not pruod of what I do, but at least I know that it's wrong. Most people in this field have their beliefs and values defined by laws passed by the State. The way I see it, if people are dumb enough to support CPS, I have no objections to farking them over. Most common line: "Why are you after us? Why don't you go after the real abusers." Our victims never see themselves as "the real abusers. Puts a sadistic smile on my face everytime.

2009-11-05 05:45:31 PM
I'm surprised that, upon finding the two kids wandering about, the police didn't tase them, or shoot them and sprinkle crack on the corpses. Isn't that SOP?

2009-11-05 05:54:23 PM
My cousins got hauled off by CPS when my uncle was being a drunk ass a few years back, and my youngest cousin ended up getting molested by the foster parent. They were way better off with my drunk uncle, he just got drunk each night and passed out in the den, my aunt took decent care of them.

If the children are being abused, they definitely deserve somebody who can raise them without violence. If one of their parents was just a drunk, they should just force the offending parent into alcohol counseling, and enforce alcohol testing. I was raised between my drunk father and my foster grandparents, and am an alcoholic myself, so I can definitely attest to the urgency of getting children out of a bad situation. But if you can feasibly keep your kids with their (sober) parents, please try to.

I have no issue with this guy getting fined. My issue is that the courts don't reduce a fine because you're unable to pay. Therefore, they shouldn't levy fines just because the accused has the money to pay them. That's not the least bit fair.

2009-11-05 06:14:03 PM
This is a story I would actually like to hear both sides on. It seems to me that any rational person would not have left children in the situation the article describes. Something doesn't make sense... I hope.

While normally not a friend of the police, I have faith that they had some sort of reason for their actions.

In closing, I blame the media.

In the article the father claimed an uncle was supposed to be watching the children. I bet he gave the same story to the cops and that is why they left the children with him and called CPS.

We had the same thing happen in my neck of the woods lately... A grandfather fell asleep with a 2-3 year old child in the house who was 'supposed' to be being watched by a twenty-something aunt. She left the house because she was sure Grandpa was watching the child. The toddler wandered outside and down the side of a highway for quite a ways until a driver saw him and stopped, loaded him in the car and then left him with a road work crew while cops responded. The road crew fed the kid, showed him what they were doing and he had a great time until the cops could come collect him and go find out who he was and what the FARK was going on.

I have a two year old daughter. We've been lucky to have only once ever had to leave her with a babysitter (who was Grandma). I'm sure she'll have to have one sooner or later but hope she'll have good sense by that time.

Yeah, it's amazing how much cop attention is concentrated in a few houses. The only time the cops have ever shown up in response to our actions was when my mother called to report my grandfather's death. Despite being told that he was quite obviously dead (in the afternoon we realized we hadn't seen anything of him all day--given how he was found he obviously died while getting up) the paramedics showed up with full lights & sirens and the cops weren't far behind.

Had plenty of other visits, though--once it was a detective investigating someone my wife worked with and growing up they showed up again and again for the very similarly-named street two blocks down.
