I need the Fark Independents™ to tell me whether I am to be mad at the union for striking or the gov't for not giving in to their demands.

Meh. The non-striking trains in Chicago are tossing infants out of their strollers onto the tracks. And I fully agree with everything Linux_Yes says. Guy was walking southbound on the northbound track, as they're supposed to (so you can see the multi-ton speeding hunk of metal coming at you). There was an "equipment failure" somewhere on the southbound track, so the southbound train was diverted onto the normally-northbound track. Someone failed to alert the inspector, and the train came up from behind him; poor bastard never saw it coming.

Hey cool, I live a block from where this vicious scheduled train unexpectedly came out of nowhere, sniffed out that guy, lept through the air and snagged him by the jugular, thrashing the life from of his carcass, while blasting some Rob Zombie for effect.

Until that really happens, I want every newspaper headline that says "TRAIN KILLED PERSON" to say "DUMBASS STEPS IN FRONT OF 200 TON OBJECT TRAVELING 60 MPH, NOTHING UNEXPECTED OCCURS."

Here is what I want to know. All of these workers have gone on strike because they want more money. Septa can't make any money while they are on strike. So, the only way they will get what they want is to completely screw the riders by increasing the fares again?

Fire these asshats and find replacements. There is no longer a need for unions, and aside from that, there are plenty of people who would gladly take those jobs for whatever money these idiots on strike are making now.

Googling for the details reveals it to be yards better than any contract my old union managed to negotiate. Were I a Philly resident I'd be inclined to tell those Jack Acids to sign it and get back to work. The union rep's counterargument is to state that the railway is flush with cash that it can afford to share. I'm not privy to the books so I have no idea how truthy that is.

That's incredibly stupid.

The scabs are burning trains and killing people. The union workers don't seem to do that at nearly the same rate.

And it's unfortunate this has gotten this far, but if management hadn't been unreasonable in the first place, this guy wouldn't be dead.

Assuming you're from Philly, in which way was management unreasonable? The offered contract looks pretty good on the surface.

Whether the union rep's counterargument is thruthy or not, it doesn't a damn bit of difference how much cash SEPTA has so long as their employees are being paid a competitive wage. By admission of the pro-union Rendell SEPTA has given the union a MORE than competitive offer. If the SEPTA workers think they can do better elsewhere, they can GTFO.

They're not scabs. The trains are a completely different union.

The guy killed was a maintenance guy who apparently hadn't checked to see if there were changes to the tracks for the day (train was going opposite to the normal orientation because of a track issue elsewhere on the line.

SEPTA is in NO WAY flush with cash. It DID get some stimulus funds to start some LONG needed projects (new trains, needed as evidenced by the 40 year old train catching fire yesterday, new fare system etc), but those are not permanent increases to SEPTA funding and would not be useful for wage increases. There have been frequent discussions and panels regarding fare increases and service reduction. Local 234 was offered a really good deal, even with the takebacks, but they want EVERYTHING. Fark 'em.

Really you are going to say what I said was stupid and follow it up by that? Have you ever been on a Septa bus before? Do a Google search for Septa bus crashes before you open up your retarded mouth again. There are far more incidents with these employees than on the train system.

And really "If management hadn't be unreasonable in the first place, this guy wouldn't be dead." It was an accident. The reason that the Septa trains aren't on strike is because they belong to a different union. Maybe you should look up the definition of scab before you let any more stupid come out of you. If they belonged to the SAME union they may be considered a scab.

When the union local is 666 expect the best.

Tomorrow, a train will collide with a BBQ sauce tanker, kill people, catch fire. Tasty! Cannibal party in Philly.

Strikes are one of the 100 reasons why public transportation sucks... When it's not the drivers that are on strike it's the mechanics, when it's not the mechanics it's another group of workers from another union. So you're almost sure to have a long strike each 2 years.

er---the people who run the trains are in a different union from the people who run the buses, subways, and trolleys. They are union workers who are working under a contract, and not replacement workers (or "scabs," as you would have it).

The family of the guy that was run down is sure to file a wrongful death lawsuit. If the lawyer that the family hires is worth anything, s/he will sue the TWU (the bus/subway/trolley operators' union) and Mr. Brown, the TWU's president, as well as SEPTA itself. And I will laugh if the jury finds the TWU and its president liable for the poor guy's death, bankrupts the union, and takes Mr. Brown's house and car away.
