It would take a long campaign to get people to trust Chrysler and GM, again. Aside from plenty of advertising, they'd have to make good cars for ten years. Both, together, will mean budget shortfalls. For awhile. So it really boils down to if they believe enough in their engineers to put forth such an investment.

Every vehicle needs to represent the very best Chrysler has to offer. Swaths of hard plastic across the dash, unfinished details or ill-conceived interiors will kill this company. The Dodge Caravan will undergo an interior overhaul to try to match the likes of the Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna.

As much as that makes them look bad, they are still totally missing the point. They need to stop selling image, and start selling VALUE... Adding smaller engines to thier lines is a start, but I bet most of what they are doing is reimaging and aesthetic changes that they hope will convince people to give them another chance. But fundementally, what they need is vehicles that are better to drive, either in handling, reliability or effeciancy, otherwise they will loose in the long run.

I still love my 2002 Jeep Liberty.

I don't even keep up with cars anymore, but when I say to myself, "Jesus, that car is ugly!" I'm finding there's a very high probability it's a Chrysler.

Most of the guys I know that ride bikes initially got Harley's for that 'attitude' or whatever, then got Suzuki or Yamahas once the problems started getting too frequent.

How they could take a proven platform like the minivan and tank it in quality is beyond me. And remember they did it while being run by Daimler Benz.

There are still people who rag on Hyundai, despite the fact that they've been producing inexpensive yet reliable vehicles for just about a decade now.

My first 2 bikes were yamahas, one good - the other pretty crappy ... then a honda.

The honda was somewhat legendary. 1980 CB400. Got it from a guy for $500 who found it sitting in a barn after 15 years off the road (last inspection sticker was from 1991).

He put a new battery in it and it started right up.

I bought it... changed the oil, put some new tires on it... rode it 4,000 miles .... threw it my parents garage over the winter for 6 months, didnt bother to pull the battery.

Pulled it out 4 months later, hit the starter and it fired right up. Rode it another 4,000 miles .... sold it to move cross country.

All i really want out of a bike is that kind of function. I want to use it, abuse it, and want the farking thing to just work. Come to think of it that's what I want out of pretty much every machine I ever interact with.

It's not just a long memory, either. It's that proving reliability over the long haul requires the long haul. You can ruin your reputation for reliability overnight, but getting it back takes a decade-- and if you fark up on the way, the clock starts over.

Good customer service can help with this, though. Consider my lowly Honda Civic. The start clutch on the CVT went at about 108,000miles-- and Honda paid for 75% of the repair. I'm something like 70,000 miles and six years out of warranty, but Honda values their reputation for reliability enough to put their money where their mouth is.

GM is making some good cars. And in my area, which is not GM-friendly by any means, I am starting to see more new Malibus.

I want. I bought my 2007 wrangler when I had a 10 minute drive to work, now that it's an hour, diesel/turbodiesel would be ideal. That and the sound/power :P I do love driving my girlfriend's dad's F250 turbodiesel, it's like driving a goddamn train.

So long as they don't go the Touareg route with it, you know, make it a twin turbo v10 diesel wrangler that gets just as bad fuel efficiency as a regular SUV.

Everyone and their brother has a Challenger around here. Mostly women driving them.

Same here, but mine's an '06. It's pretty much stock except for better all terrain tires and OEM skid plates...took it out west for two weeks of boondocking around Moab and Ouray and had a blast.

The Compass was an abomination...no way it should have had seven slots in the grill. Call it a Chrysler, but for the love of Eugene, don't call it a Jeep.

I wanted something cheap and fast so I bought this used for $6,500:

My mom got a Grand Cherokee with the 3.0 I6 turbodiesel. I think 230ish hp and 370ish lb-ft torque. Great acceleration and nice ride. From a quick google search, seems to have been discontinued.

It's funny to hear people dis'ing Chrysler. Every car brand has proved themselves capable of making both good cars and cars that were either cheap junk or expensive mediocrity.

Bottom line, anyone who buys a car based solely on brand is an idiot. You need to do your homework and research indiviual models, and know what you're looking for - to me, reliablity and price trump all else. I would not buy a car based of either Consumer Reports or car magazine reviews. I personally have had excellent results using J.D Power reviews.
