Considering the number of traffic stops that end badly for police, the officer is rightly concerned for his own safety when the person starts the encounter off by being confrontational, ignores repeated warnings and ignores directions.

I'm usually against excessive force by the police, but this guy had it coming.

I'll pay for the bullet they should have used. There is a time and place to argue with a cop and it is in a courtroom.

He was smart to wait for backup. The guy definitely deserved to be tasered.

He could have just been letting the guy know that it was loose and he might lose it. then the guy gets confrontational.

or the police officer could've just told him what he was pulling him over for. that would take, oh, i don't know, about 4 seconds. Put yourself in the guy-being-pulled-over's shoes. he simply got out of his car and the cop just about shat his pants and escalated the situation.

really the conversation reminded me of a person shaking a magic 8-ball and getting the same answer over and over again.

You do know that it's perfectly within your legal rights to ask if you're being detained, and why, right?

And all for a license plate? Daaaaaammmnnnn.

i agree the cops need a good ball sack tazing for escalating this bullshiat way too far. but who doesn't know to sit in their car when they get pulled over? stud boy is the one who started the ball rolling.

Yes. According to the article, he was charged with "resisting arrest" and was acquitted.

Perhaps because at no time in the entire tape did anyone tell the guy that he was under arrest?

Is running from a taser resisting arrest?

Is shaking convulsively from a taser resisting arrest?

/Old enough to remember when you were expected to get out of the car and the police would view it as a sign of disrespect if you made them get out.

Yeah, but as soon as the cop answered the guy would have taken the response and used it as an excuse to argue. "I pulled you over for [insert cause here]" would just result in "I never [insert cause here, past tense]!"

Even if the cop had said "I apologize, sir- you're obviously correct and I should never have pulled you over. Please, be on your way," the guy would have kept it up.

As a hardcore civil libertarian, I can still see how you should not get out of your car, and walk over to the police car in a "I'm a badass" pose after being pulled over.

A single tasering would have sufficed, but I think the system should accept a further five as a "stupid tax" upon the victim.

2009-11-05 11:52:03 AM
The cop is in the right. There is a reason the cops have a protocol to handle these situations. this guy decided that he doesnt care about the protocol designed to protect the officers. But they have to assume everyone could potentially be dangerous and so they follow a specific protocol of how to handle these situations. Some police are assholes, and they abuse their power, but this does not mean any citizen has the right to assume that a cop is trying to be an asshole to them. All this cop did pulled the guy over and that was enought to piss the guy off. Sorry buddy, thats not how it works. You should have listened and everything would have been fine.

You have to obey police, you just have to. We give them authority for a reason. So respect it, and if you have a gripe, take it to court. but you do not challange a cop like that. What is he supposed to do, he has to remain in control of the situation and the only way to control this guy was to take him down.

no, but your supposed to follow the direction of a police officer. They way our system is designed, they have to remain in control and uphold the image of authority. So when this guy obnoxiously challanges the cop, he needed to be taken down. Lets say for a second the cop was super nice. And just tried to be calm and nice to the guy. All that would do is convince a million other people to argue with cops when they get pulled over and give them reason to believe they can get away with it. This cant happen or the police will no longer be able to control the population.

Not sure if trolling...

Typically such "protocols" are written into "law" and published for "citizens" so everyone knows the "protocol". Would the officer still been "in the right" to discharge his weapon on an individual not under arrest had he been in plain clothes?

"I pulled you over because your front license plate is loose."
"What? You lying pig, my license plate isn't- oh, wait. Yeah, it is."
"Yeah, let me just check your registration to verify that that's really your license plate, and then I've got a socket wrench in my trunk and we'll tighten that baby up."
"Thanks, Officer."

The guy was immediately confrontational and did not follow commands. That's a scary situation for any cop.

As close as the kid approaches, are you kidding me? Then he runs once they shoot the barbs at him.

"What'd I do"
"You got out of your car."

If this kids wins his lawsuit, all these young bastards that already act like they're entitled to everything are going to do little things to get pulled over, then act just like this kid did hoping they'll also be able to get a nice payout from a lawsuit... until they start getting shot, then their families will really vilify the cops.

When pulled over, stay in your farking car.

the idiot escalated the situation, not the cop. he would have gotten off with a warning if he had stayed in his car. Hell, he would have gotten off with a warning if he had gotten out of his car and gotten right back in when asked to do so the very first time.

But he gets out of his car with his hand in his pockets. then he acts all pissy and keeps advancing and stepping forward towards a cop that is all too aware that people in his line of work get killed at routine traffic stops.

I think the most telling thing in defense of the cop is the fact that the guy kept advancing towards him. I would have tazed him the second he got within 10 feet of me after repeated warnings with obvious stress in my voice.

Fark that guy, he had a nice tazing coming about two minutes into the video, let alone 60 warnings into it. Sixty dude, SIXTY.
