Yes, those were sunny days, like sweepin' the clouds away. We were on our way to where the air was sweet. I wish we knew how to get, how to get back to Sesame Street...

That would be the Street that Jim Henson made and worked on. His legacy has not been treated kindly by his executors.

I miss most of his work: the Muppet Show, Fraggle Rock, the real Sesame Street...RIP, Jim Henson:

pounddawg: We own SS 1969-1979 on DVD. It actually contains parental warnings.

Of course. The old school Sesame Street isn't suitable for the learning needs of today's child.

...That is roughly what the warning says, right? I don't have the DVDs with me right now. I also think it's bullshiat, and the little farks today could use more old Sesame Street instead of whatever they're watching now. I am also an old man (at heart) and set in my ways, so get off my farking lawn.

Oh, and next week, there's a 2 disc Sesame Street set coming out. Just greatest hits this time, I don't believe there are any full episodes.

That's par for the course now, although probably completely unnecessary on Sesame Street. I have a Popeye set and the third Tom and Jerry set, and they each have the same kind of warning.

Sad to say my kid has moved on to Yo Gabba Gabba. She gets to meet the whole gang when we do the show in LA next week.

I hope to hip her to the muppets again soon.

It's not that the people who did that wanted to. It's just that some of the old stuff has things that are no longer considered appropriate to a pre-school audience.

Some of the early Muppets smoked cigarettes, drank booze etc.

Also, fear of modeling (children enacting behavior they see on TV shows) is a huge issue for this type of programming. All the kids shows are endlessly checked for possible problems.

I can tell you that the decision to put the warning label on the DVD's was not an easy one for the folks at Sesame Street and no one loves that show more than the people who create it.

I heard that it also had something to do with the show originally being focused on kids about 8 years old, as opposed to its current target audience of preschoolers.

Times have changed, and Sesame Street has to compete with a lot of newer, more commercial shows, but these clips represent the show at its best. It still has its moments of greatness.

I know you're trolling, but growing up I didn't even THINK about that. I can't imagine what, if any, kid asked their parents about the logistics of Bert and Ernie living together.

I caught the show a couple of times a year or two ago, hoping for some nostalgia, but it was awful. The whole second half was "the Elmo show," and that anoying bastard was in much of the first half as well. I read that the programme was re-tooled for a younger crowd, barely able to speak.

Cookie Monster decided that "cookies are a sometimes food"; Elmo replaced Grover (meanwhile, no new hottie has unseated the antiquated Maria); Oscar's not an a-hole anymore; Bert killed off Mr. Hooper; there's no Don Music bashing his head into the piano; inter alia.

As with anything, there have been a few bright moments.
