They're still around. Well, Andrew is anyway. Some friends of mine saw them last year in Atlanta.

Is it really that WTF when a band does a cover way outside their genre? Seems pretty commonplace to me.

/a friend of mine from high school didn't know that Gimme Shelter was a cover.

2009-11-04 02:51:09 PM
On the other hand, Dolly's rendition of "Stairway to Heaven" is actually pretty good.

2009-11-04 02:52:33 PM
I remember wincing through a rendition of Don McLean's Vincent by Jerry Reed.

The best cover of anything by anyone will always be the Laibach version of Let it Be.

My favorite Dolly song. Sadly not the song being covered.

/a cover of a song outside your genre is not a WTF moment. It's overly common anymore.

They could be covering nursery rhymes or Opeth and you couldn't tell with that sound quality...

2009-11-04 05:57:53 PM
Damn. That sucked as bad as the White Stripes version. There are very few songs that are perfect. You should never try to cover a perfect song. Jolene is perfect as it is.

2009-11-04 06:03:05 PM
Anyone know if there is a PAL version of this?

2009-11-04 06:35:57 PM
The Sisters did quite a few covers, Gimme Shelter, Emma and 1969 for example.

Yep. I'm a big Sisters of Mercy fan, but the video is damn near impossible to enjoy.

Funny. I read that headline as Dolly Parton singing Sisters of Mercy, which is a song by Leonard Cohen. Wondered about the WTF, since I imagine she could do a good jorb with it.

How did I know it was going to be Jolene?

Best covers thread?

The correct answer is always going to be Negativland covering "I Still Haven't Found what I'm Looking For"

Covers that are awesome I've heard in the past two months:

Sex Pistols - "My Way"
Sentenced - "The Trooper"
Peter Gabriel - "Cape Cod Kwassamassa" (I just heard it a week ago - it's AWESOME.)
Eric Cartman - "Sailing Away" (Every so often it goes on repeat for a week solid)
Eric Cartman - "Pokerface"

I was always fond of Laibach's version of "Sympathy for the Devil", but only the "Who Killed the Kennedys" remix. Somehow, a woman singing it makes more sense for me. More of a dance version too.

I was at that show also. The sound quality blew, especially at the edge of the stage. It think maybe it was Andrew's way of saying, "It sounds better if you just stand a little further back...".

/still a good show

How is that "WTF"? It made the rounds in the 80's, a cover of a well-covered song from a band known for doing lots of covers. Cover.

Also fairly well-known, but more weird than this, is their version of ABBA's "Gimme, Gimme, Gimme (A Man After Midnight)".

I saw SoM last year - god, what a terrible show.

all they did was pump the whole building full of dense fake smoke, have the most half ass lights ever, and phone in the performance. the song selection was pretty bad too...

really, i was so psyched to see them, and so, so disappointed.

2009-11-05 07:34:52 PM
I don't think I'd even want to see The Sisters of Mercy live at this point. I'd much prefer to remember them as they were back in the 80s. I can still listen to those three LPs and pre-Elektra singles anytime, so I'm good.
