Similar beards, certainly, but the music is miles apart.

Subby has never listened to one of the two bands mentioned because that didn't resemble anything Kings of Leon ahve done whatsoever.

I kind of like the video, but I'm guessing that there's new rules that every headline has to have a troll in it now?

What band? Do you mean 'The Band' because if you do they were about as far from being hipsters as a band can be and still fall into the 'popular music' catagory.

Robbie Robertson is a POS and stole the rights to most of The Bands music, with the help of that other POS, Albert Grossman.

Levon Helm and the rest of The Band FTW.

Levon Helm is one of the coolest guys on the planet. He came to campus a couple years ago to talk about his roots music project and told a story (yeah, I know, Bro) about being a kid and having to take the battery out of his dad's tractor in order to hook it up to the radio so he could listen to the Grand Ole Opry. That's about as shiat-kicking as it gets.

The fact that he rarely speaks ill of Robertson shows he has the patience of a saint. Plus a lot of class.

I just started getting into the Band this year after I heard Electric Dirt, which is by far one of my favorite albums in a long time. I read quite a bit on the history of the Band, and came to the conclusion that Levon's a pretty classy dude and Robbie's a dick. And I've never quite figured out why Robbie is at the Rock and Roll HOF ceremony every year.

If we're going by the fark definition of hipster, then they fall into this category. The Doors, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Dylan, Lennon, and Carrot Top do as well.

Bands like KOL, Arcade fire, Decemberists, and Conor Oberst are called Hipster douchebags for doing the exact same thing these guys were doing back in the day. Yes, Levon is from the US. He nows lives in NY State and does "Midnight Rambles" frequently at his home for people to go and see.

Ronnie Hawkins brought levon with him to Toronto back in the 60's and The Hawks (aka the band) eventually outgrew playing the same songs and wanted to play original material. Ronnie Hawkins was also pretty controlling so they left. Of course it wasn't nesecarily on the worst of terms, he made them into a full band, and provided them with the ability to form their own group eventually.

I believe they toured with Dylan for 2-3 years or so, then started their short, but great career.

All the new bands you mentioned aren't about getting pussy, they're just straight up pussies. The Band would drink and fight all of them before going on and killing a live show. There's not even a comparison. None of the bands you mentioned will have the staying power of The Band. And I am not an old man, The Band broke up before I was born. Doesn't mean I don't have ears. There's still good new music, but not the soft garbage you brought up.

I like Kings of Leon. For what it's worth, "Youth and Young Manhood" is pretty damned good, and "Because of the Times" is OK. "Aha, Shake" I could do without and the the new one just plain blows.

That's really interesting. Our cover band does both Black Keys and KoL stuff. I never really put the two into the same musical bucket.

Just FYI for all the KoL haters: (as crass and juvenile as it sounds) Regardless if you like their songs or not, chicks dig their songs. If you can sing 'Sex on Fire' in a bar you are going to get some.

Dude? Your comment shows how little you know about The Band or rock music in the 60s/70s.

The Band's sound is damned near timeless and the ones you mentioned - with Oberst being the exception - most likely won't be played in another 5 to 10 years.

As for 'the things were better when I was a kid' comment the truth is that yeah, as far as certain music goes, it was.

The Band, as just one example, were originals, KOL, Arcade Fire, etc, aren't; they are just re-inventing the wheel, so to speak.

I'm not trying to take anything away from groups like The Band. I'm just saying the groups they're calling hipster douchbags are doing the same shiat as the bands of yesteryear were doing. If "The Band" was around today, just starting out, the members of fark would call them hipster douchebags because of the way they look and the music they play.

Magnetar: Kings of Leon is the new Creed.

Why? There's no evidence they're d-bags like Scott Stapp. They just get played a whole frickin lot on radio, and have become very popular very quickly. But it's not like their success came overnight, or were created by a label executive, or lack musical talent.

Bands don't get to choose their fans (unless they want to be complete and total assholes). Judging a band on who likes them is farking retarded.

Just to clarify, The Hawks were Dylan's back up band for one tour in the 60's after he went electric, not The Band. Two different bands, two different lineups, some common members.

The Hawks first show with Dylan was the Newport Folk Festival that he played electric for the first time. Talk about a rough start to that relationship.

The Band did later tour with Dylan in the 70's as co-headliners.

My Levon Helm story:

I saw The Band (without Robbie Robertson) in Wichita at the Cotillion Ballroom in the late 80's.

At the end of the show, when most big name bands would be long gone, Levon Helm was at the front door shaking hands and thanking people for coming.

Most people didn't seem to realize it, but we did and stopped to talk to him. I can personally vouch that he is a good ol' down home Arkansaw boy who never once fidgeted or looked at his watch or acted in any way like he had anything else to do than stand there and talk to us.
