(Washington Post)   Now that he's had some time to think about it, DC sniper John Allen Muhammad probably shouldn't have represented himself in court and so would like to not be executed, please   (washingtonpost.com) divider line 226

Let's execute him in a proper way.
Take target practice on him from 500 yards.

I really would like to be compassionate but I'm finding a hard time caring about this guy's wishes in light of what he did.

I don't really believe in capital punishment, but I don't think it's a bad idea in his case.

Exactly. Capital Punishment should be used scarcely but accurately. People like him, people who rape and kill children, and so on.

It's not a numbers game, no need to try and top China.

I have no problem believing that he was/is insane.

I am willing to have a civil discussion about the merits of the motion to stop the execution.

Right after we kill him.

the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, Senior Virginia Assistant Attorney General Katherine B. Burnett said Muhammad had made a "very foolish and unwise decision" to represent himself.

Opinions on the DC sniper case aside...

What does it say about the accessibility and complexity of our legal system if it is so prohibitive that anyone not professionally schooled in law would be very foolish and unwise to represent his or herself?

I have mixed feelings about CP. But this guy needs to go in a box, in the ground, poste-haste.

One of the few groups that I feel the death penalty is appropriate for:

People too insane to be safely kept behind bars.
People who were caught in a murder with an incredible mountain of evidence.

And for a limited time: People named John Allen Muhammad.

2009-11-04 08:54:57 AM
I remember one of this guy's letters to the MontCo sheriff:

"Your children are not safe, anywhere, at any time."

Yeah, so count your blessings they don't have death penalty by chipper-shredder in Virginia, Muhammad.

This. Why is the fact that he's utterly, dangerously insane used as a reason NOT to execute him? Yes, I know the argument that you can't be guilty without intent, but what I mean is: if the guy is unable to control himself and murderously dangerous, then that's precisely who society needs to execute.

It says that our legal system is very complex. Not everything can be simple.

What does it say about our highway system that we have to have actual professional engineers design bridges?

What does it say about our airplanes that we actually have to have specialized pilots to operate them instead of anyone just doing it themselves?

That a person who represents himself has a fool for a lawyer?

Childhood beatings caused this? In that case I should be frothing at the mouth every time I hear a belt buckle jingle.

Some things are hard, and it takes professionals with experience to accomplish them.

How many people can successfully do even light plumbing, much less representing themselves in court when their life is on the line?

Don't be a dumbass.

2009-11-04 09:01:35 AM
I was living in Herndon VA when all this was happening and I know exactly where they caught both of those bastards on the i-70 rest area in Middletown, MD. I've used the gas station where a murder took place in Manassas VA. I've been to the Home Depot where he shot and killed that FBI agent too.

These two punks terrorized the DC area. No mercy on either of them. They deserve the harshest punishment the government can dish out.

Take target practice on him from 500 yards.

Make it 100 yards with 200 12yr old boyscouts with single shot .22s.

Dress him up in a purple Barney costume. That should motivate them just enough.

He was provided competent and professional counsel for free, so I am not sure what exactly you think this shows about anything. He choose to defend himself instead. Almost always a bad idea. If your life is on the line, do you go with the professional or decide you can probably figure it out for yourself?

100 yards with a single-shot 22? I know quite a few guys from my Scout troop who would have him down with a shot to the head in about five seconds.

Make it 100 yards and 200 8 year old Cub Scouts, and there we might have your meaning. ;-)

This guy has to go. What he did was just pure meanness. I'm against killing criminals 99.999% of the time, but we shouldn't suffer this man's existence. He was shooting people for fun. F*** him. Send him to Asmodius for some ass-ramming in Hell.

Molavian: Interesting concept. No capital punishment required, just stick him in the box and bury him alive.

Extra twist, first you marinate him. In a liquid that tastes very good (Even after a couple of days) and smells even better than it tastes. You make him marinate until he really just can't take the stuff off.

Then when you throw him in the box, you also give him a knife, a fork and a few liters of water.

Tada!

Petit_Merdeux: I have no problem believing that he was/is insane.

OK, so he's insane. Now, if he ever regains his sanity, he will be faced with the reality of what he did, and as a sane and moral person, would be unable to live with that and commit suicide. Therefore the state may as well save him the mental anguish and put him out of his misery now.

Or so I have seen a similar case argued.

Still think target practice at Quantico is a good idea too.

Our legal is pretty large and complex. And it sometimes seems as if it is written simply to provide lawyers with a good living.

But it is your right, for better or worse, to exercise stupid in a court of law.

And I am of the opinion that there is a time and place for capital punishment. And this is the time and place.

May God have Mercy on his soul. Because I don't
