Kids should not be believed as a default position unless you're their parent. Just like with rape, authorities should always, always maintain a healthy scepticism about claims of abuse.

Kids lie about sexual abuse all the time, especially when their parents encourage them to 'reveal' abuse for gain, whether it be financial gain, or the emotional gain the parent gets for being the parent of a victim and having awesome drama to centre attention on themselves.

And in particular, the 80s and 90s were an incredibly bad time. The position at that time was to believe the kids when they 'revealed' abuse, no matter how improbable or even impossible the revelation was, and to always disbelieve when they said later it never happened. Leading experts in the field were wrong about how to manage claims of sexual abuse in pretty much every way possible.

There was the 'satanic panic' where large groups of children admitted to horrible abuse that never happened prompted by both their parents and so-called specialists. And there was the 'recovered memories' fashion where false memories were created out of nothingness again by bad practice by so-called specialists.

It's been shown again and again that the belief that a child couldn't possibly make up such a story is just not supported by evidence.

None of us know whether or not Michael Jackson abused kids. He clearly was unable to grow up, and was weird, but that doesn't make him a molester. Peter Ellis (new window) is proof that being weird is enough to get you convicted of child sexual abuse in defiance of common sense. Given the clear 'secondary gain' motivation I would place my bet on it being an extortion racket by the parents.
