Peter Purves in episode 4 of "The Chase"... Worst British actor doing an American Accent EVER!

Mind you, the guy iving the tour on the top of the Empire State Building was pretty bad, too.

Yeah, Hollywood has started stealing Brits because apparently they can't find 30-something or 40-something American actors who are "fresh" to American viewers. There was an article I read about 6 months ago about this. And honestly, I really don't mind they do this, since most of these actors are theater transplants.

or whatshisname - the irish actor who had the lead in the short-lived "life on mars" remake. he was actually pretty good.

incidentally, tim roth is freaking brilliant in "lie to me." so brilliant, in fact, that it makes all his costars seem like stock TV drama actors. they're not bad - and they're trying hard - but roth is absolutely effortless in his portrayal. i hope the show sticks around so they can fine-tune it.

swingerhead: And hes going to fake an American accent since hes supposedly from Chicago. Do they think we wont watch a show where the character has a Brittish accent?

Tennant doesn't have a British accent. He has a Scottish accent. He had to "fake" the Estuary accent for Doctor Who, just like he'll probably "fake" an American accent for this show.

It's called "acting."

Well actually, the movie was based upon a novel which came out in 2003. The TV show had nothing to do with either. You may already know this. :)

loathable cockroach: Fixed for the ignorant

You're right, I was confusing Britain with England. I admit to being an ignorant American, and I won't make that mistake again.

Though, if you had accused, say, George Bush of having a Texas accent, not an American accent, I'd probably let that slide. On the other hand, I'm not a loathable cockroach.

Not quite. Most actors who play the Doctor stay for roughly two or three years before moving on. It's a great role, but typecasting's a biatch.

After Dick van Dyke in Mary Poppins, the British are allowed to mangle American accents as much as they want and we are prohibited from complaining. How long will this last? FOREVER!

The Drs. Craine's father on Frasier lived decades in Chicago, but is FlashHarry: or whatshisname - the irish actor who had the lead in the short-lived "life on mars" remake. he was actually pretty good.

His was a less convincing accent than Jamie Bamber's - and at least Bamber was just affecting a generic North American accent, as his hometown of Caprica City doesn't correspond to any particular place in the real world. Meanwhile Jason O'Mara's version of Tyler [vice John Simm's original, to bring this back around to a discussion of Time Lords] was supposed to have been born and raised in white trash neighbourhoods of New York City. He sounded like what he was in real life: a Irishman trying to sound generically American.
