Bears are smart, and can move quickly and scarily quietly when they want to. If they were both asleep, the only warning noise the second guy would've gotten was the splitting-a-ripe-melon sound the first guy's skull made...then he's got about 2 seconds to wake up, find his gun, and get a headshot.
