Reasons why its about oil.

1) This isn't about terrorism, if you think it is, you need to step back. Saddam may an evil SOB, but he hasn't orchestrated any attacks on us.

2) If this isn't about terrorism, whats left? This isn't about "democracy" or "freedom" communism is dead, that fight is over. If we were worried about WMD's, we should have been in Iraq 20 years ago. Oh wait, we were, we just supplied them with their chem. and bio. weapons then.

3) Bush and Cheney have DIRECT ties to big oil. Once we go in and set our stake in the Middle East, by taking over a country rich in oil, do you expect companies like Haliburton to NOT make a killing?

4) Less a point than a statement, but if you think politicians do anything for any purpose OTHER than money, you HAVE to tell me where you got those rose colored glasses.

Protestors show up all over the planet.

Hey Harmonia, which one are you?

So whose propaganda is the correct propoganda? Are you implying by posting a quote from someone we are at war with that that quote must be fact?

2003-03-20 11:55:01 AM
Don't we only get like 5% of their oil anyways? I don't really think its about oil. It's about "You tried to kill my daddy"

I know this is going to sound crazy, but I honestly believe that even these protesters feel that this war is justified, and just refuse to admit it out loud.

Does that mean anyone believing something different to you is just in denial, and secretly knows it?

I'll be happy to see Saddam gone, but am seriously against this war right now. There are a whole number of reasons, all thoroughly thrashed out in full elsewhere.

CryinOutLoud: Explain to me why you are trying to argue with me then. For someone who is obviously old enough to have been divorced and have offspring I would think their maturity would coincide with their age. Through your childish words and "na na nee boo boo" mannerisms, you have proven me wrong.

If a News Channel could visualy show signs of their collective mentality/motives:

Fox News would be sporting a 50 foot boner right now.

And what's with the mask? How silly can you get. Why just wear ONLY the mask? Heck, I can't wait to see the Fox news desk anchor (Bill Oriely?) in New York suit up in the full chemical suit and army fatigues as soon as this war really starts rolling.

Also, it's entirely possible that Fox News sent agents into Iraq to set fire to all the oil wells. And that just goes to show how crasy I think the Fox News network is, and I'm a Bush supporter!

Unfortunately the fact that Iraq doesn't supply a huge percentage of world oil doesn't help much.

Oil is very price sensitive and a supply reduction of 5-10% could result in a price rise to $40 dollars a barrel.

Obviously an oil price shock is very bad for the world economy, and the US in particualar.

2003-03-20 12:03:44 PM
FatherG, Thanks...

2003-03-20 12:04:42 PM
Drivinwest- That doesn't make any sense at all. If we just lifted the sanctions, its Saddam that gets rich, not us. By going in, WE control the oil, not them.

2003-03-20 12:04:51 PM
THIS WAR IS NOT ABOUT OIL!

it's about the expansion of u.s. economic interests. us capitalists need markets more than we need oil.

2003-03-20 12:05:35 PM
Ok then, so if oil price shock is bad for the WORLD economy, why wouldn't oil be a considerable reason for war, along with the horrible treatment of Iraqi people, tortures, etc.?

Well, I really don't like Yellow Times, but that is an interesting point. I just don't see that there are many other reasons to go in. WMD's have become the new rallying cry, but it will be interesting to see what happens regarding that in the next month.

2003-03-20 12:08:45 PM
The war will cost plenty.
Rebuilding will cost plenty.
Oil is worth plenty.
Why not use Iraq's resource to rebuild Iraq?
That's one REAL good reason to put out the oil fires.

I'll say.

Q: How do you quadruple your money in 5 days post-Clinton?
A: Buy shares of Dick Cheney subsidiary penny-stocks!

Okay so I tune to Faux, all they got is really bad video... of nothing! Nothing is happening. The reporter claims they are firing artillery (Howitzers) into Iraq, but you couldn't tell from the crappy video.

2003-03-20 12:10:10 PM
Maybe they can use Tinactin foot spray on it. It seems to work on the commericals.

Light crude at 30.00 now... up .65 from a half hour ago.

Since when did we ever get our oil from Iraq?

See there's this little thing called the global economy. Although it will help that the US already has contracts with other countries whose oil production is not being disrupted right now, the US will now have to compete with countries that used to buy significant amounts of oil from Iraq. I believe Iraq provided around 2 million barrels/day. If that supply goes off the market for an extended period of time it puts more demand on oil produced from other countries and hence the price of oil will go up no matter what the name of your country is or where they got their oil from before.

2003-03-20 12:12:13 PM
they're bombing something. got the night vision on and everything. unfortunately i'm trying to do about 5 things at once so i don't quite know exactly what's going on, but the bottom of the screen says "army's third infantry in artillery attack on iraq-kuwait border" and "operation 'freedom-something' underway" and stuff like that. FOX is talking to some people that are 100 meters from where the artillery is being fired. mostly just saying it's hella loud and that things are becoming way busy over there.

i can post more as i hear about it.

Vroomazoom or Megapaw Can you post it where you can put pictures this has a true FARK quality this thing is great....

***Tarl3k

Reasons why its about oil.

Given the hundreds of billions that this war may cost, don't you think the net profit would be higher by lifting sanctions and simply letting the Iraqi taps flow?

Sorry, there are plenty of good arguments against war but this being over oil is a terrible one.***

No, because Bush dosen't lose the tax money personally, the tax payers do, but if he makes money on the oil through his back door oil dealing, does that get refunded back to the people? Hahaha. Riiight. Oil prices are down another dollar a barrel this month.....looking outside gas is 2$ a gallon. That makes sense.....

2003-03-20 12:14:08 PM
ok, now the story's on the main page.

I'll be happy to see Saddam gone, but am seriously against this war right now.

Why don't you write a scathing letter and maybe he'll leave on his own?

2003-03-20 12:16:51 PM
Talk about your scorched earth strategy....

Actually, if they hadn't done this, we would have (and blamed it on them, so there's no guarantee that we didn't). Remember, this is a war by an oilman against an oilman for the benefit of oilmen. Supply goes down, price goes up. Equipment destraoyed is equipment replaced and opportunities for exploration.

Remember, Halliburton makes oil equipment. How can Dick line his pockets if the oil fields are intact?

Fvckin' Bush!

2003-03-20 12:18:35 PM
In case anybody doesn't remember: In a recent article (that was btw in an earlier Fark link) Cheney's oil company apparently has a concession to rebuild the oil fields that are destroyed as a result of military action. My, my, my...that smells like big $$$,$$$,$$$,$$$.00! Now everyone stand and salute while the band plays "Hail To The Thief".

2003-03-20 12:18:48 PM
All you Oil excuse people suck. It's not about oil and if you truly believe that you're a moron. We didn't ask for this war, they brought it to us on 9-11. Too many of you have forgotten this and it is truly sad. Was Afghanistan for oil? No. Would this be happening were it not for 9-11? No. So take your oil excuse and shove it. I pass Ground Zero every day when I go to work and I will never forgot what those bastards did. Saddam is a harborer of terrorists and if you don't believe that theres something wrong with you. That is reason enough in my mind to take him out before something terrible happens. God bless George Bush and our soldiers. History will prove this war right.
