Its the result of massive overfishing, the likes of which Japan has long been known for.

Boy, this week's South Park really socked it to that one guy I've never heard of from a show I've never heard of. How do they come up with such biting social satire?

It was just this morning that, again, I was pondering Japan's incessant need to kill everything in the sea. I'd quite enjoy watching the ocean fight back. :D

Ha, I have seen maybe 2 SP episodes in the last 3 years. In fact, I have not even watched the referenced episode yet. But please, carry on. Your misguided diatribe and obvious lack of reading comprehension is amusing.

I used TinEye to find out the origins of that image... this is the closest I got (translated using Google from Japanese):

Tsukero the dolphins come
"Images neta"

Audience applause in the arts is a wild dolphin's.
I wonder where I'm standing in the way of that coming from the tail fin of a dolphin or a dolphin rather invaded.
I wonder in the back like a peanut tank Still is.

From wiki on the Nomura Jellyfish:

The problem with combating the jellyfish is that when they are under attack or killed, they release billions of sperm or eggs which connect in the water and attach to rocks or coral formations. When the conditions are favourable the creatures detach from their home, millions at a time, and grow into more jellyfish.

Wonderful.

I don't care how many lame episodes South Park may have over the years. The dramatic moment regarding the Enola Gay in that episode made me laugh for a good five straight minutes.

2009-11-02 04:14:43 PM
First paragraph of article:

A Japanese trawler capsized when its 3-man crew apparently tried to haul up a net that was too heavy - loaded with giant Nomura's jellyfish.

Fox News front page:

Tentacled Terror
Japanese fisherman terrorized by giant jellyfish, which attacked and sunk a 10-ton fishing boat

It's not news, it's just ridiculous.

The guys on Whale Wars (and also Greenpeace in the past) have rammed other boats intentionally and have tried to foul other ships propellers. Isn't there some legal response that the Japanese can follow. As far as I'm concerned, intentionally ramming another vessel, especially in the frozen waters of the antarctic is a violent attack or attempted piracy. Certainly it can't be legal.

Technically speaking, yes. They could complain and have the other ships crew and owners brought up on charges through multiple venues. Maritime courts don't smile on things like ramming.

Problem is many of the things the Japanese get up to are in extreme bad taste and shady if not outright illegal at times. They fish things they shouldn't and where they shouldn't. they overrun their quotas and dry up resources needed by less affluent nations to literally keep food on the table.

A whaling ship captain might win the fight for a few thousand dollars damage to their boat. But they stand to lose millions if anyone gets off their ass and gets serious about enforcing fishing rights. They'd rather everyone ignore what's going on, even if it means suffering a few scrapes.

Most of what Greenpeace and the like have done are simple harassment. They haven't sunk anything yet... at least so far as I've heard.
So you have an uneasy stalemate of activists trying not to cross the line and fishermen trying to stay under the radar.

Source? Whaling is legal. Whale tastes like ass, but whaling is legal, even under international law.

Whaling for food is illegal under the International Convention for the Regulation of Whaling, which Japan has recognized. However, it does not prohibit whaling for scientific purposes. Since the ICRW banned commercial whaling in 1982, Japan uses this loophole to justify it's continued whaling, attempting to answer the great scientific mysteries like "how many whales can we eat without making them totally extinct?" and "what does whale gristle taste like with wasabi?"

For an interesting read, try Japan`s foreign policy position statement here.

Even though the show about Sea Shepard is relatively new, they've been around since the late 70's... The fact that you've not heard of them just shows your ignorance to the world around you.
Maybe you should check out the news more, or at the very least, check out Wikipedia every so often. I'm not sure what you're doing with your free time but it's obviously misplaced.

You're right.

I clearly do not spend enough of my time watching shows on the Animal Planet cable network, nor following the news PR coverage surrounding the show.

My life is wasted.
