shiat. There goes Plan B. OK, what do I have to do to actually kill the music industry?

2009-11-02 10:45:25 AM
They're right. I saved so much money not buying music and movies I bought an Xbox 360 and a 40" flatscreen.

2009-11-02 11:26:32 AM
Almost one in 10 of those questioned aged between 16 and 50 said they downloaded music illegally.

However, eight out of 10 of that group also bought CDs, vinyl and as MP3s.

In other news, 8 out of 10 people who drive over the speed limit also obey other traffic laws. So, by speeding, they are making our highways safer.

Didn't we just do this ?

I bet 7 of those remaining 9 that say they don't download music illegally are liars.

I feel like illegally downloading the song Yesterday (new window)

Look, I'm no boy scout. I've downloaded music illegally before, and I've ripped discs from the library. Some were titles that I would have paid money for, too.

But... by and large, if I want something I pay for it. That applies to all kinds of consumable goods, not just music.

Maybe if I was a pimply-faced teenager with no money and a desire to "stick it to the man," I'd think differently. Maybe not. But that doesn't matter to me now.

I'm a full-grown man with some money in the bank. I don't need to steal shiat.

Do you?

timujin: false equivalence is false

More like: 7 in 10 people say they don't use illict drugs.
The other 3 in 10 say they've never robbed a liquor store and spend $40 there weekly.

Ergo, drug use isn't the demon "they" make it out to be.

apparently you're not, you don't, and you do...you know, since you've admitted to copyright infringement.

here's a hint for you, dumbass, it's not farking theft and downloading is NOT farking illegal. Making available for download is illegal, not downloading.

You sound a little touchy. Probably just your guilty conscious talking. Or the paranoia.

Fine. "Taking something that doesn't rightfully belong to you without paying for it, against the expressed wishes of its owners and creators." Whatever word you wish to apply to that activity... I don't really need to do that. (But yeah, I've done it before too, so clearly I'm not on some big moral crusade against it.)

neither. sick of people misunderstanding the law and then spouting off the same tired bullshiat like it was gospel.

reproduction, distribution and exhibition without permission is illegal.

Pimply-faced teenager vs Mr Fabulous

PFT - Downloads/steals a ton of music, yet also spends half his weekly paycheck from McDonalds on new music

Mr Fab - Buys a new Cold Play CD every 2 to 3 years.

Which consumer is more valuable to the record industry?

I just don't feel like spending 20$ now when I can spend 5$ in a couple of months after the CD I want hits the sale bin.

Clearly, I am killing the music industry.

I am reminded of a quote from Elwood Blues, "By the year 2006, the music known today as the blues will exist only in the classical records section of your local public library."

Copyright infringement is not theft for the same reason doing your own oil change isn't stealing from Jiffy Lube. Did i steal from you when i picked up that dollar bill on the ground that you didn't notice? It wasn't yours to begin with. i got it and you didn't. That's not theft.

They knew this from way back when Napster was on the cross.

2009-11-02 02:09:10 PM
Hadn't bought music for years. Napster appears; I download and listen to lots of stuff I'd heard of, but never heard. I buy 6 cds over a few months.

Napster goes away; haven't bought music since.

I'm never going to buy what I haven't heard. Go pick on Clear Channel.

I wonder if there's a timeframe. I haven't illegally downloaded music in about 4 years (kept infecting my machine with crap downloaded off Kazaa and Limewire). So if you asked me if I downloaded music illegally I could say yes, but it wouldn't have much basis in reality these days.

Actually, it'd be like the liquor companies complaining that illegal drug use was cutting into their profits and then having a study show that a large percentage of people who use drugs also drink alcohol, while a much smaller percentage of people who abstain from drugs drink.

This is not only false, it is missing the point entirely. I've been a music geek for most of my life, ever since I was the proverbial PFT 35 years ago. I buy a couple dozen CDs per year, and acquire another 20 or so per year by other means (i.e. mostly as gifts from other music fans).

The industry is made for consumers like me. People with disposable income who keep buying music year after year... both from new bands and from legacy acts. And I have to say, now that the industry standard has bumped up to DRM-free files at 256 kps, I find myself downloading stuff (legally) more and more often.

The teenagers I know (and yes, I do know many, since my kid is a teen) only like their own little handful of bands. I listen to cool shiat; they listen to shiat. (My daughter is a notable exception to that rule.)

As for the Coldplay crack... no. That would be my wife.

I stopped downloading music from pirate sites when legit downloading sites became decent. I have a subscription to eMusic, through which I found a ton of good music I would never have heard of otherwise. And I get to keep the downloads DRM free.

I'm still curious if a business model like the one Public Enemy is trying can work.

I think I've spent $200 over the past month on vinyl just because I've been feeling nostalgic as of late. I was amazed at how good Revolver sounded. Even the remasters didn't impress me as much as the record did.
/not an audiophile
//downloads an obscene amount of music
///completely stoked to hear that the remasters are coming to vinyl
