It doesn't surprise me one bit that he cannot recall a lot of the conversations about it, as they were mostly in his mind trivial banter. While there are many who like to pretend that it's a big conspiracy, a 'hit job' to take down a political opponent, there's not really evidence to indicate it. Otherwise, if your account of events differs from someone else's, even in an inconsequential matter, you face going to prison for lying to the feds. These days, I'd personally go even further and refuse to talk to a fed. There's no upside to it, and a huge downside. If they think they have something on me, bring charges, but at least they won't be able to gin up a charge of lying.

As somebody that works in the field that Cheney so flippantly disregards and feeds leaks to the press about, I can tell you there are plenty of "stupid" (not malicious) actions that could land you in prison, or worse. Personally I believe he was being malicious, though I'm open-minded enough to accept general stupidity as an alternative explanation. Either way, the man swore an oath to protect this country. He's a filthy piece of shiat.

The 5th Amendment doesn't protect you from being forced to testify against others (who will, in turn, testify against you.) Falsely claiming that you don't recall ensures that their memory stays precisely as bad as yours.

You really think that is what happened to Scooter? You do know he was convicted of both perjury and obstruction of justice. The jury certainly didn't think his lies were about inconsequential matters.
