You know, it's hard to imagine the guys of today playing without a mask, it would be lunacy. Not to mention how cool and unique they can be made to look, as evidenced by some of the pictures in this thread.

I never understood how they played without masks until I read that they only took wrist shots back in the day
/in the autobiography of Frank Boucher
//highly recommend it to fans of old time hockey

And it allowed Hasek to use his face to stop shots, on purpose.

I'm pretty sure he played that game with a shattered face.

What is interesting is the amount of individuality that goalies are allowed in decorating their masks. It is hard to imagine the NFL allowing players to this kind of creative freedom with their uniforms/equipment.

Backcatchers recently in baseball started finally doing it too...
Not sure who the first was there, but seems to me like it was only in the last 5-10 years they started doing it as I don't recall anyone when the Jays were actually good having their masks painted.

Jacques Plante didn't invent the mask. he wasn't even the first guy to wear a mask in an NHL game.

hockeyfarker: Jacques Plante didn't invent the mask. he wasn't even the first guy to wear a mask in an NHL game.

He was the first one to wear it regularly. Clint Benedict was technically the first NHLer to wear some sort of goalie mask(really more of a glorified nose guard) but he only wore it for 5 games. It didn't become a regular thing till Plante started wearing one 30 yrs later.

Hard to imagine NFLer being creative or interesting what so ever.

Seriously, ever listen to most pro football players? Dumb as doornails for anything not related to X's, O's and route patterns.

And Basketball players? Even worse.

Hockey players, for all the crap they get, I find are generally the most bright and more adaptable of any professional athletes.

Chris Osgood has a very nice mask, but he insists on wearing his Special-Kid-Headknocker-Helmet. Can't find a picture of it, but it has a wizard holding a crystal ball; pretty cute.
