Is there a rocket themed Native American tapestry in the lobby? I need to channel Stanley Kubrick.

If the ghost hunter and psychic try to convince you not to take a certain room, remember, they're just ratcheting up the hype so you'll write a good review in your paranormal publication.

I've stayed at the Stanley and the Hotel Coronado, both supposedly haunted, and managed to get out of there with just a few harmless ghostbites. This is such a beautiful spot, though. It's at about 7,500-foot elevation, and lugging your luggage up the stairs was quite, uh, lugging.

The hotel wasn't used in the Kubrick version of "The Shining", but it was used in "Dumb & Dumber", and they have some memorabilia from that in the lobby.

I've always wondered why ghosts never show up the next day after someone dies? It's always ghosts of people that died 40 or 400 years ago - not of people who died last week.

It only took The Sorrow about 2 years to make himself visible to people. Now speaking to them, he's still working on that...

I stayed at a Haunted Hotel, the The Olympic Hotel, in Centralia WA. I had bad dreams the whole night, but it's got a cool old wooden bar, and the staff are quite friendly!

I'm going to go with "Because ghosts don't exist and people who think they see them are really seeing shadows that their mind interprets as ghosts."

I went on an historical tour of the Stanley, and managed to piss off the rest of the tour group. As we were looking around the grounds, the swings in the playground were swinging, but no one was on them (I presume a gust of wind set them going). I suggested that those two little girls were just playing.

I got dirty looks the rest of the tour.

hee.

I stayed at The Stanley once when my Grandma was playing in a band up thre. A total honeymoon hotel, we watched several couples getting their freak on. Grandma planted herself at the window + watched people going at it in their rooms. I finally asked what she was doing + she said "Just trying to see if the plumbing changed after all these years!"

My Grandma is 92 now and just as freaking awesome!! Love her!!

/no ghost sightings there

Dude, if you died today, would you really want to start haunting tomorrow, or spend some time floating around unseen, looking for showering hotties, et cetera?

One theory is that the ghost of someone contemporary wouldn't draw a lot of attention to themselves (would be wearing modern clothes like everyone else, would probably look fairly "fresh" and solid) so even if you saw one you probably wouldn't know it was one.

Meanwhile the older ghosts look a lot more like ghosts because they're in 16th century clothes and have been around for so long they're transparent. So you're more likely to notice one as looking a little unusual.

OOooorrrrr that's just all bullshiat and it's a pointless question :) Whatever.

I love Estes Park, and during the summer I take the one hour trip in the mornings to get there and just meander through the streets. Stanley Hotel is gorgeous on the outside and has a great garden that you can wander about in after the ghost tour (which is more a historical tour than anything, and pretty neat if you're a history nerd). It's not remotely spooky, and the view from the front terrace is amazing.

/their gift shop is outrageously overpriced, though

Been there done that; nothing haunted about that place. Rocky Mountain National Park is pretty cool; too many crowds on account of Denver.

Best part about about the Stanley is it has the best bar in Estes Park.

Got married in the Stanley. Scary as hell. The hotel is pretty tame though.
