Is this a really important message to get out?
Are we "breeders" a threatened minority?

By not participating in Halloween I am being consistent in my opposition to "pride" parades of all sorts. It's a political statement. Not laziness. Really.

Is the `Gay people exist too' message important anymore either? I'm reminded of the Simpsons episode.

"We're here, we're queer, get used to it!"
Lisa: We ARE used to it, you do this every year.

Dan Savage is awesome. Funny and intelligent. If you don't already I highly recommend you listen to his Savage Love sex advice podcast. After listening to mainstream talk shows it is refreshing to hear someone responding to people with an open-mind, compassion, patience, and and good humor. And pick up one of his books while you're at it, "The Kid" is excellent.

Oh, let them have their parties. Who does it hurt?

I think it's empowering for women to dress slutilly for Halloween. It's too bad that society won't let them dress like that more often (or that most women take the taboos of society so seriously that they won't let themselves dress like that more often).

There's nothing shameful about the human body. If you've got a nice one, why not share it with the world? Let the boobies flow!

Ed Grubermann: Oh, let them have their parties. Who does it hurt?

Doesn't hurt a thing. Actually if they had a gay pride parade here, I'd go just to see if it was entertaining. I just don't think it serves much purpose. Everybody knows gay people exist, and more and more people just don't care.

One of my favorites is pretty obscure: "Oh no. My brains."

Is there a "I like to eat chickens parade" coming soon? If so, I am so there.

I stopped reading after the first paragraph, which had nothing to do with the headline (I've heard the "all the costumes are sexy" routine already). What's the deal?

2009-10-31 09:33:01 AM
Dan needs to send a memo to the organizers of Pride in Atlanta since this is their weekend.

On a side note, it is going to be lots of fun today at the Georgia Aquarium since they are letting kids wearing costumes in for free and also having a Pride dress up party.

2009-10-31 09:35:29 AM
I am also in favor of gay and straight pride days. There's nothing wrong with people dressing slutty if they feel like it.nekom: Ed Grubermann: Oh, let them have their parties. Who does it hurt?

Seriously, if the purpose is just to have fun being sexy and reaffirm that it's fun to be sexy, that's enough of a purpose for me.

Society does "let them" dress like that "more often," but here's the thing--women can dress sexy, or be treated like a homo sapien with a brain who deserves respect, but not both. If women show an inch of cleavage, or form-fitting clothes, it's a license for men to act like morons in heat, and they can say, "she asked for it." They also feel like they have a pass on treating her like a dumb sex toy.

So women do the logical thing and cover up. You want sexier looking women? Don't act like a horny dumbass around sexy women.

If, everyday, you live/work in an area that encourages you to flaunt your sexuality in a fun and flirty way, then for you, it might be. Some of us have to wear suits to work, and appreciate a chance to unbutton, unzip, and show off.

Really? I guess I've been aware of him too long, because his columns all seem the same by now. Like Jon Stewart, he's a one-trick pony. He does it well, he does it a lot, and if I were him, I'd be so bored with myself I'd be going all David Carradine in Bangkok.

Sexually revealing costumes are for Brazilians. Americans shouldn't do it. It's like berets. Berets are for Frenchmen with ugly mustaches, school girls, and commandos. Everyone else looks like a dork wearing a beret. Americans in sexually revealing costumes are just poaching on another country's tradition.

Because, as everyone knows, Brazil invented sexuality in 1911 and still hold the patent.

Americans look phony in sexually revealing costumes. They look self-conscious rather than either liberated or attractive. Like Meg Ryan in "In the Cut".

Brilliant analysis as usual.

Unfortunately, someone parroting the Halloween-as-female-oppression argument will be entirely deaf to Savage's argument, as shown in the articles second comment.

I thought the Brazilian Wax Incident of 1896 brought this to light -- but I guess it does take time for patent applications to go through.

What's funny is I pretty much only see people actually wearing the uber slutty costumes in the ads for the costumes themselves and on TV.

ph0rk: What's funny is I pretty much only see people actually wearing the uber slutty costumes in the ads for the costumes themselves and on TV.

That's because, let's face it, people shouldn't be half naked beyond a certain age and stage of physical condition, if you know what I mean. The trouble is that if you go to a costume store, there is nothing for females but sexy (fill in the blank) costumes, when it's really a bad idea for a lot of people. Maybe they only wear them at private parties, where their friends see them.

I don't think I could handle a gay bar or pride. super gayness makes me uncomfortable, would be nice to be able to hold hands in public though
