OK, so to cure his internet addiction they took him out to the desert for two months and taught him survival skills, which he really enjoyed.

Tune in next year for the story of a former internet addict lost wandering the deserts of the mid-west, building traps and sharpening knives on rocks.

There's an easy way to cure Internet addiction.

You just have the addict click on Gorgor links a few times.

This. Addictive personalities just need something to latch on to. Take him to a gym or something. If he's going to be obsessive, let him obssess about something healthy.

I am pissed of that they have inpatient work for something as meanless as this crap, when I can't get my paranoid, delusional, depressed and psychotic wife into inpatient because they don't believe she is a threat to anyone.

I'm thinking something more along the lines of a Fallen Earth addiction actually.

They are. The emotional distress they cause is really just a bonus.

The hardest thing for him will be the attunement process for RL.

IMO, WoW actually runs better on a Mac and has some nifty added features: a built-in fraps-like program and a built-in iTunes remote.

Nah. I've got lots of IRL shiat going on, a kid, a career, lotsa friends and I'm headed to VooDooFest in New Orleans tomorrow after work.
I also have a fully epic geared lvl 80 druid, and I'll kick your arse in Quake, too.

It's all in how you play your time around.

That's the problem with RL. The attunements for all the worthwhile things take your whole life to get, everyone is undergeared, and mostly because all the elite guilds horde all the phat lewt.

It is a bit brutal on the graphics card though. I wish I would have known about the fan control program before it started degrading my card.

OK...
I'm calling out this BS

The dude started playing WOW in "Summer 2008" and by "early October" he is calling his father for help with his "addiction".
By "late October" he is in some for-profit treatment program?

The dude was only playing WOW for at most 4 months.
Not a real addict.

Just a newb with no discipline.

I found the best way to stop playing it (when I used to play a long time ago) was to get involved with something in WoW that required me to log on at a certain time. When I logged on because I had to, not because I wanted to, it wasn't any fun, and then I was able to see how much time I was actually wasting.

Now I waste all that time on Borderlands.

I'm in the same boat... I'll probably start a month or so before Cataclysm comes out and farm heroics to get some welfare t9 gear. Gotta make leveling as painless as possible.

Thisbymaster: I am pissed of that they have inpatient work for something as meanless as this crap, when I can't get my paranoid, delusional, depressed and psychotic wife into inpatient because they don't believe she is a threat to anyone.

I think the people in the article were paying for a private program. If you're trying to get your wife into a normal hospital it's normally impossible unless they've already attempted suicide or to seriously injure someone else.

My mom is schizophrenic and I know all about how hard it is to actually get help. Several times when she went off her meds the hospital declared she wasn't crazy enough and couldn't take her in (she's one of the worst cases her Doctor's have seen, so that's just asinine).
When she actually ended up injuring herself after they refused to take her in, THEN they'd finally accept her.
The problem is that psychiatric facilities don't have as much funding as they should, are short on knowledgeable employees and room.

It says 10 months in the article. That's not an addiction either. It's just that the ones playing for the longest time are hard to reach as they need a crane to remove the headset from their jaws and they won't speak to anyone without their WOW wife present.

/she ain't logged on.

2009-10-28 12:32:38 PM
First Step: Switch off the Cable modem and put in DSL
Second Step: Switch off the DSL and put in a 56k modem
Third Step: 33.6 Modem
Forth Step: 12.5" VGA Monitor
Fifth Step: C64 with a 1200 baud modem connecting to an ISP with PINE and LYNX.

Congrats. You are cured.
Send me some money.

No, its when you have 6 characters maxed out and spread across 3 or 4 realms, this guy was just a pussy.
