Do be sensitive to using colloquialisms or terms of endearment that may cause offence (My love, My dear)

Y'know, I'd listen to the snot in my hankie before I'd listen to you.

Homosexual boys and girls frequently use banned words in the afternoon and evening.

And I suppose they're not allowed to cover their badge numbers at any time either.

We all know how well THAT rule has worked out.

Marcus Aurelius: And I suppose they're not allowed to cover their badge numbers at any time either.

To be fair, that is pretty much the exclusive preserve of the Met.

I thought the UK was like the US and everyone needed their stinking badges.

FTA: 'In some countries, including the UK, the evening meal time is traditionally thought of as being around 5-7pm but this might be different, say, for a family from America who might have their main meal earlier and thus for them evening may be an earlier time.'

Evening in America is from 5 p.m. on. We don't call 3 p.m. "evening." We don't eat dinner at 4 p.m. unless we're in an old folks' home.

According to one force's official guidelines, it could confuse people from different cultural backgrounds.

My brain actually hurts from how stupid this is. If you're too retarded to know what "afternoon" is, you can just go ahead and be confused.

Wait, am I reading the article right? Aren't they just given a guide, and not really banned from anything?

As long as they can still say "What's all this then?" they'll do alright.

I can see many greenlights from this tool!

e.g.

COULD THE LOONY LEFT GIVE YOUR MORTGAGE DIABETES?
WILL THE HOUSE PRICE CRASH KILL YOUR CHILDREN?
WILL MUSLIMS MAKE DRIVERS IMPOTENT?

so i go to the buffet at 3:45 to get the lunch price knowing the dinner menu is put out at 4:01 and i smile at the old folks around me.

as is traditional for the daily mail, the truth is not exactly as represented.

by "banned from using certain words" they mean "reminded that some words may not mean the same times to people from other cultures". its actually pretty good advice for your average copper.

simpsonfan: When someone from another culture moves to a country, they need to adapt, not the people where they move to. In the English language 'Evening' refers to a time of day. If foreigners are offended by that, too bad, they get to be offended. Better than offending by banning the words.

THIS.

If you make the choice to migrate to another country, you might just have to adjust your thinking to interact with the culture there. This kind of nonsense just makes the process take longer.

There were those of us called 'ugly Americans' because we were not tuned into every nuance of a foreign culture when visiting abroad.

But people belonging to certain groups must always be deferred to, whether its calling a certain time of day 'afternoon' or 'evening', or allowing them to refuse service to a customer who is trying to check out a package of bacon.

I've always thought that it was my job to learn colloquialisms and customs of another country when I visit and that it was my own damned problem if I had issues with any of them that caught me unaware. Not the other way around.

Silly me. That'll save myself a lot of time.
