You would think that if they can afford to keep 150 dogs, they could afford a little better food for themselves.

leave them in a enclosed space. when the number of dogs still alive equals the number of people wanting to adopt=problem solved.

Damn you! I had a picture AND a witty comment lined up. Now I need to wait for the next puppy mill story.

I am willing to cut the puppy mill people some slack if the dogs were previously taken care of decently, and then the person taking care of them died. That's an extenuating circumstance if there ever was one.

I wish everyone could be this wonderful. I do hope that all the dogs are spayed or neutered before or after adoption...

I wish there were more ppl like this in the world. They did something amazing for these animals and are giving them a better life.

300 pounds of food a day.

That's a lot of poop.

2009-10-25 10:08:51 AM
This is absolutely one of my peet poves in the whole world, so I'll just say it: Quit buying purebred dogs. Every trashy entity in the world thinks that they'll get them a couple of purebred dogs, and make a fortune off of the pups.

Judging by the ads in my local paper (or anyone's), they're succeeding. Meanwhile, thousands of good dogs and cats are killed because other trashy entities just can't be bothered to have them fixed or take care of them correctly.

Yeah, I know--you live in an apartment, you've always WANTED one of those dogs, and you have the money to buy it. Sometimes, just because you can afford something, and you WANT it, doesn't make it right.

If you're running an operation like that, you hire people to help.

This was animal hording, which is a problem with the individual, intentions notwithstanding.

If one person couldn't do it, she should have made that call two weeks into losing the rest of her help.

It sounds like they're the ones hoarding.

Are the animals being kept in proper living conditions? With 150 of them, my guess is no.

2009-10-25 10:45:22 AM
Let's not forget about the article last Thursday that analyzed the ecological impact of dog ownership, accounting for energy used in dog food production, etc. Specifically, the authors reached the conclusion that a medium-sized dog has roughly the same annual ecological impact as driving an SUV 6000 miles per year.

These people are taking care of 150 dogs.

Thus, from an environmental point of view, these people are putting more stress on the environment than a neighborhood full of Hummers and Suburbans. Hero tag indeed.

Yeah, but when the "help" was her husband, I can understand that there might some emotional issues on account of his death that would interfere with the puppy mill lady making the best decisions. I'm willing to cut her some slack on that. We don't know, of course, how long ago the husband had died or what the conditions were like prior to his death. If it's only been two months I can see how she would be overwhelmed. Two years, and she should have gotten her act together.

Consuming for the sake of consuming is retarded, but buying things that are related to my hobbies can really bring joy to my life. Of course, it's taken me years to get where I am on that, and will likely take another 10 to 15 years before I'm finished. It's not exactly an instant gratification situation.

Didn't say we all did. But it's kind of a guiding light for our society. Even if we don't, we're supposed to. Or else you get weird looks and people whispering "hippie" or "eco-freak" or something. Or "poor"--could there be anything worse?

Puppy mills are bad, bad, bad. I think it should be required for all people who "need" a purebred dog to at least do a GIS for puppy mill.

Agreed. Even trash food like Ol' Roy is not *that* poor in nutrients.

Perhaps they were underfed before and the new family needs to compensate?

The pictures FTA show Dachshunds, shiat Tzus and Chihuahuas...all small breed dogs. If they ate two pounds of food per day, it would mean they were eating roughly 20% to 40% of their body weight per day. That's not compensation, that's exaggeration.
