Russia is still paying the price for his choice, with recent estimates calculating that one in every seven Russians is an alcoholic. Male life expectancy has sunk to under 60.

I would still choose that over becoming a muslim...
2003-03-18 04:41:29 PM
well everything has a downside. alcoholism among russian men is so rampant that there literally hundreds of websites full of beautiful russian women who will gladly marry you provided you don't drink. it's a pity all farkers are alcoholics otherwise we'd have actual girlfriends!
2003-03-18 04:57:10 PM
Wait a minute, I thought that a Muslim government would be enlightened, tolerant and bake potato chips at three times the normal rate?

Thank you, booze. The cause of, and solution to, all of life's problems.
2003-03-18 08:07:08 PM
No nation should have a national religion. Cases in point Saudi Arabia and Iran.
2003-03-18 08:07:45 PM
vodka means, roughly, "little water". it's a diminutive.

da svidanya
2003-03-18 08:07:46 PM
In the region of world that is russia and was formerly soviet booze drinks you..
2003-03-18 08:09:27 PM
Russia has a low life expectancy because of massive crime, poverty and all the other leftovers from Communism, not alcohol.

2003-03-18 08:09:28 PM
I know plenty of muslims that drink Russian milk.

The only reason Russians drink so much booze is because of the flouride in the water.
2003-03-18 08:12:13 PM
The Russians had some funny Agitprop temperance posters too! Like this one:

I guess the Russian drink is only vodka!

I should know.

I think the slogan for the last one is: Don't get drunk and ride on your grandmother.

Um, don't you mean Do svidaniya if you're going to do a transliteration...

Ya tolko nachinayu uchit russkiy yazyk.

vodka means, roughly, "little water". it's a diminutive.

Nah, I think its called that because its mostly has alcohol and has little water.
2003-03-18 08:18:04 PM
What? Some country besides ours refuses to embrace the religion of peace?

/mock shock
2003-03-18 08:19:22 PM

I think that if you wanna make a soft sound you gotta add a '... as in uchit'. Ofcourse I never took the "How To Write Russian With Latin Letters" class, so I could be wrong.

I was fortunate in being able to go to Moscow on a business trip several years ago (before the crash of the ruble). We were working with a lead scientist in the area of hormone receptors. Anyway, we did not drink at work, but had a lot of vodka at dinner. What we would think of as 'water' carafes were filled with vodka, and it was poured around like water. Interesting country with a very sad recent history. One of those places where it's good to visit, and also good to leave.

I was sounding it out phonetically. It's been too long since I got that C for two straight semesters to remember the exact order of the vowels and such. I still remember my Cyrillic and think it's one of the most beautiful of alphabets.

Eezvineetyeh ee prahsteetyeh, maya droog!

Reminds me of elementary school.

Looking at some of the things that the Russian people have had to survive through over years, I think being drunk through it would have been the only way to make it through.

Whats better, 60 years of misery that you can't remember, or 76 years of misery you can relish in every detail of?
2003-03-18 08:29:27 PM

Oh please, the Russians were happy for all those years! They got rid of all the dangerous elements of society, like skilled technical personnel, and University professors, and army officers that were DIRE THREATS to society. Plus they industrialized the whole country from scratch!

What's that about the peasants? Their lives didn't matter, because they were dirty, and smelt like cabbage.
2003-03-18 08:31:44 PM
Did you know that the Molotov cocktail was actually a common Russian drink before the revolution? Once the revolutionaries started using it to start fires, they actually had to water it down because it caught fire too easily.
2003-03-18 08:31:54 PM
maybe they live in poverty because they spend their money on booze?
2003-03-18 08:34:25 PM
Chime... Don't underestimate bored assembly programmers

Or you could just use a translator like one of hundreds found on the net. Which is most likely how it was done. Afterall, who the hell would waste their time typing that.
2003-03-18 08:34:41 PM
The Molotov cocktail wasn't called that until the Second World War... when Molotov had risen to prominence. During the Revolution Molotov would've been a low-level party functionary, because everyone but Stalin who was of any importance was dead or in prison by WW2.
2003-03-18 08:35:15 PM

no joke.

that is all.

Rhiannon - The same people who would probably spend 20 minutes trying to fit Admiral Ackbar into a Photoshop.

15 Litres a year works out to just 2.3 drinks a day given 40% alcohol per volume and that a drink = 1.5 ounces of Vodka.

2.3 drinks a day may be a tiny bit too much for every day consumption, but certainly grounds for being an alcoholic.

I wonder if the entire population is counted, or just those of "drinking age"... It would be more meaningful to me if it was averaged between those who drank and those who did not...
2003-03-18 08:37:15 PM
You have a point OBB.
2003-03-18 08:37:22 PM
I meant, "but certainly *not* grounds for being an alcoholic."

One the one hand: Liver disease, domestic violence, unjustified murder...

On the other: Islam, sanctioned domestic violence, sanctioned murder for absurd offenses...

I think the choice is pretty easy, at least drunkenness has the occasional moments of clarity...
