Ummm, it was not an early 80's model. One year only, 1987.

And they lost HP damn quick in temps over about 80 and in high humidity.

Why do you think Frank Tilghman was so quick to censor the phrase "FOR A NICE F*CK, CALL..." by changing it to say "FOR A NICE BUICK, CALL..." in Road House?

downside to turbocharging, though could be offset a bit with a little work on the intercooler.

Not really. It's the downside to boosting an engine that much.

I got my 86' Supra up to 137 in 1999 on I-80, before a cop in Battle Mountain, Nevada pulled me over and put me in the once-cell jail with this guy (Kyle Ray) (new window) for 4 hours (until I could get my dad to wire me $800 bail):

It's the only time Ive ever been in jail... but it was with a MURDERER.

We watched the movie "Witness" on the jail TV, and I gave him my prisoner Jello Snack (I wasnt hungry)

He seemed like a nice guy.

I think he got sentenced to 40 years.

Sorry, I call BS on a police officer "catching up" to a guy going 150mph. I think someone wanted something really cool to write down on the ticket they wrote when they finally caught someone going 103.

I can imagine the cop in court now: "Yes, that's correct, I had to go 170mph to overtake the guy that was speeding. In what car, you ask? Why, my trusty Ford Crown Vic, of course. It goes 170mph, doesn't it?"

The officer pulled over the Buick and arrested the driver

In Texas, speeding is the only moving violation they can't arrest you for. They must have piled on an extra charge.

Police say the Buick was going so fast that it took the officer some time to catch up. When he did, he clocked the car going 150 m.p.h.

More likely, he got up to 150 during the pursuit and wrote that as the pursued vehicle's speed. A lot of police do that.

The speed limit on that stretch of 114 is 60, which would mean the car was driving 2 and a half times the speed limit.

My record ratio beats that, probably 70 in a 25. I've also done 25+ in a 10. I don't even count the 5 mph parking lots; if those are enforceable I don't take them seriously enough to remember.

As a passenger, I found 80+ in a 30 zone rather fast. Too fast, unlike the previously-mentioned speeds.

bullchit. I ahd a 1984 monte carlo that a cop tried to tell me i was going 50 around a 110 degree turn in a residential neigborhood. not possible, and I refuse to believethat buick could do 150 on the highway in a striaght line downhill with the wind to its back. MAYBE 120. MAYBE.

75 over the limit or 75 period?

I assume 75 period, in which case I'm sure it could pretty easily, especially if it was a GTi model.

160 in any Buick is pushing it though, even in a GNX. A Buick SUV would have to pushed damn hard to break 120 I'm thinkin'.

ZAZ: In Texas, speeding is the only moving violation they can't arrest you for. They must have piled on an extra charge.

A charge for reckless driving (TX Transp. Code Ch. 545.401) can carry a jail sentence of up to 30 days and they can take you to jail if they choose to apply that law at the time of the stop. It doesn't specifically say it in the law, but generally they can use their discretion and apply the statute once they get you going at least 20 mph over the speed limit. Here is the actual language of the law

A person
commits an offense if the person drives a vehicle in wilful or
wanton disregard for the safety of persons or property

You may be able to beat the charge, but they will take you in and make you post bail. Especially if you try to tell them you know more than them about the law.

Yes, governed sucks, but hey... Got my 2000 Monte Carlo SS (NA 3800) up to 120 on a stretch of highway near here, that's where the governor kicks in. Don't know if I'd get much more out of it even with the governor removed.

Only Buick story I have:

I was playing an RPG a friend of mine invented a few years ago. My character was a split-personality TK-using wraith in the form of a little girl. While in the midst of fighting, my character had a car thrown at her. So continually, whenever the subject of massive damage comes up in other games, I always repeat the phrase I said then: "I GOT HIT BY A BUICK!"

A friend of mine growing up had an '78 Buick Riviera that had a 403 C.I. engine in a front wheel drive configuration. Yes, I know that sounds strange, but look it up on wikipedia if you don't believe me. One night we had to go pick up a carload of girls two towns away from us. We made the run at some points doing 140+. When we got back to his house I literally got out of the car and lit a cigarette off of the front passenger side brake rotor.

We spent the next day replacing the brakes on all four corners of the car.

25 over can get you arrested in TX, but they'll probably only arrest you for 25 over if you don't speak English.
