The highlights of watching it at the Piazza last night:

This conversation with a friend:
"Someone fired shots over there on 2nd St before"
"Oh yeah, it was just someone getting mugged, and someone going by fired shots into the air to scare him off"
Cause that makes it SO much better

And the two biatches who got into a catfight, got hauled off by security, and then one of the biatch's boyfriends started attacking security as they hauled her out.

Worst sport ever. Sit in the crowd for 3-4 hours, for 12 minutes of actual action and the rest is just millionaires standing around in a field.

Great.

Now the people we Pennsylvanians know as loudmouth assholes and the rest of the country knows as Philly sports fans won't STFU.

If sports are such a bore for you, and baseball specifically, then why do you rush to threads like these? I'm sorry if you wanted to appear witty through your ennui, as you sound merely whiny. If you cannot appreciate the high drama of playoff baseball then you cannot appreciate sport... sure it is slow but every pitch counts.

As for me, during Lidge's last outs, when the announcers just decided to STFU and let the inning unfold... beautiful. I wish that I could watch the whole game that way... especially with the on-screen displays of info (count, score, pitch speed) you hardly need their input. For exciting moments, just listen to the crowd noise in response!

As a yankee fan who lives and works in philly this will be interesting as the verbal abuse already started. No worries tho, the yankees pitching will not fold like the dodgers did.

Seriously.
I think that is why I actually prefer Fox to TBS in its coverage. Joe Buck is so monotone and always seems so bored that I don't have to worry about the announcer's over enthusiasm or inane babbling getting in my way. But McCarver.... yeah, he sucks real hard.

You're forgetting 1969 and 1986.

Though '69 was probably better, since we probably had a farkton of Yankees fans on our side in '86, and that's not exactly a group of people most Mets fans want support from.

are you serious... CC pitched on short rest for 2 whole months prior to that. The brewers rode him to the playoffs and it killed them. you are going to see a totally different pitcher, one who is rested and on his game.

That's true. I still think the Phils win that game if the matchup is Cliff Lee vs CC Sabathia. It'll be a pitching duel.

Burnett wins Game 2 in another duel with Hamels. Phils win 3 and 4 on offense with Blanton and Pedro pitching well enough to get by. Then Cliff Lee finishes the whole thing up.

Phils in 5.

You understand the game 4 match will probably be blanton/pedro vs. CC right? Yanks will be going with 3 starters again just like they did it back in the day. Pettite is no slouch either... and the yanks have the best closer in MLB history and arguably the best playoff pitcher ever. Good luck with that.

Not to get ahead of ourselves-- the Yankees are still a game away, but the Yankees are better than the Phillies in every measurable way. They finished with 103 wins in the toughest division in baseball-- 10 more than the Phillies who had half their games against the Nats, Braves, Mets and Marlins.

I'm not counting out the Phillys-- they are a really good team. I just don't think you can base anything on a three game series that was played in May.

We'll see what happens. I'm not worried. Going into this season people on Fark and pundits said the Phillies would fall to the Mets and maybe even to the Marlins and that Ibanez was a mistake. I remember, I submitted an article about it that got greenlit. They were wrong, and the Phils made them look silly. Going into the NLDS, the pundits predicted the Rockies to win. They were wrong and the Phils made them look silly. Going into the NLCS the pundits said the Dodgers had the best bullpen in baseball, and the Phils made them look silly. And right now the Phillies are predicted as the underdogs even though the ALCS is as yet undecided.

You understand the Yankees manager is still Girardi, right? ;)

I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Lee pitch on short rest if needed.

The Yankees are a better team, though the Phillies are better than their overall record indicates because their 5th pitcher for two thirds of the season was Jamie Moyer and a rotation of AAA callups instead of Cliff Lee.

It certainly should be a good series.

Bull. The World Series is perfectly valid for determining the best North American team. Besides, I was a Phillies fan until 1985 when I sat in Fenway Park for the first time. The Phils have always been my second team to root for anyway (third being anyone who beats the Yankees, of course.)

But I'm also a big World Baseball Classic fan and an Ichiro fan. He truly deserves to be called a world champion. I wish they would show it on a normal channel and hold it every year or two at most.

The Yanks have a small edge on BA and HRs. The Phils have a small edge on Steals and ERA. The Yanks scored more runs, on average, but they also allowed more runs, on average than the Phillies did.

That doesn't really work. The Yankees play in a league with a DH. A 4.26 ERA in the AL is better than a 4.16 ERA in the NL.
