damn typo

The valid point is that early reporting to "major" events is usually sh*t, but that doesn't mean TV news is.

Best examples of this were the speculation during 9/11 (although most news orgs were remarkably professional and kept that to a minimum) and the mining disaster about 2 years ago when 12 miners died and 1 survived, but for a while it was being reported to that 12 survived and that was being told to the families too.

CNN is.

This just in, nothing has changed. Now, back to your regularly scheduled programming.

Cable news is garbage. If you find CNN, Fox, etc. to be entertaining then I consider you an idiot.

The reason people are so pissed of, at least in part, is because they were duped.

If people weren't literally dropping what they were doing so they could consume the cheap sideshow of stuff like this, networks wouldn't do it.

This is an example of supply feeding demand, sensationalistic as it was.

No one who tuned in or rode message boards all afternoon that day has a right to biatch about cable news. (except those callously called it a hoax from the beginning)

Never should have been a national news story in the first place.

I think that is a little harsh...

Well, then again.

A six year old floating away in a helium aircraft shouldn't be news?

And Fox isn't a news show, so that doesn't count.

Wait, it claims to be? Really? Sonuva gun.

OK, Fox is.

No, it shouldn't. It certainly doesn't belong on the national headlines.

I like the Wishy-Washington Post. They are insane enough to put graphic descriptions of abortion literally an inch away from the comics.

Rapmaster2000: Cable news is garbage. If you find CNN, Fox, etc. to be entertaining then I consider you an idiot.

Meaning it should be entertaining? Rather than, say, informative? I'd say the main problem with most news outlets is that they *are* more geared towards entertainment.

Knucklepopper: A six year old floating away in a helium aircraft shouldn't be news?

Not when it's blatantly obvious to all but the most mentally challenged that that size balloon couldn't possibly lift the kid.

You should see our local news. "Bubba Joe Bob got stuck in his combine again after his favorite candy bar fell in. Stay tuned."

Yeah, it's lose lose for me but I'll take my chances with MSNBC. CNN and Fox make me chortle.

Every news outlet is complicit in selling Bush's wars of conquest to the American people and have yet to even acknowledge that their irresponsibility has cost tens of thousands of lives and billions of dollars. They shouldn't be trusted as anything other than fluffy edutainment until every reporter and editor gets down on their knees and begs forgiveness from America.

"Now facing criminal charges, with his credibility maybe damaged forever, Heene could find to his dismay that his TV career lies in tatters."

"This alleged scam may have given Heene a boost beyond his wildest dreams."

WTF?

This article was written by someone at The Associated Press, not the Washington Post.

Nope.. the kids should be pulled away from the parents. Then the parents should be smack hard across the face.

Game over.

Gaboo: Not when it's blatantly obvious to all but the most mentally challenged that that size balloon couldn't possibly lift the kid.

Most people know precisely jack about aerodynamics and lift. The "size" is also misleading due to being seen from varying distances.

2009-10-19 12:42:36 PM
I worry about the way the article ends, FTA:

"In the hands of the right producer, he's promotable and marketable. Never mind that the boy in the balloon wasn't really in the balloon. This alleged scam may have given Heene a boost beyond his wildest dreams."

Aren't there laws that prevent criminals from profiting by their crimes? I would hope this lowlife is unable to profit from a tell all book about the balloon incident in the same way Charles Manson is unable to profit from a tell all book about his murders. Any of you fark lawyers know?

2009-10-19 12:42:52 PM
Unfortunately it is the pack mentality, one goes with a story and the other cable networks and outlets jump all over it. Evidence the car chases, etc.

Also they do not need much in the ratings to make money, as exampled in the OJ trial. Not that many people watched, but it darn cheap to produce. One on air person, a camera crew, and ta da, hours of cheap TV.

Sort of like the Jay Leno show, as long as it's cheap to produce and you get some tards to watch, you can show a profit. Nobody really cares about content, just bottom line.

And as a stockholder, I applaud that short term view

Indeed, even without the kid it would still be national news if only because it caused DIA to shut down.

Why does this poor little tool get notoriety as a balloon boy? He didn't go in a balloon. What a bunch of bullshiat. This all started with the kid they stuffed into the pipe down in Midland or wherever little Jessica was. Little Jessica was the start of the downfall of western civilization. We are now hurtling toward the idiocracy phase at an ever increasing speed.

Ignorance of TFA is breathtaking here. The thrust of the article is not the value (or lack thereof) in TV news, but the exploding number of reality shows that glamorize ever-increasing levels of asshole behavior -- noting the reason for the alleged fakery by the Heene family was to get a reality show.

Anyone want to bet there isn't some bottom-feeding TV exec already trying figure out a way to get these clowns a show?

2009-10-19 12:46:30 PM
CNN's got video of the inside of the balloon here (new window). My favorite part is the three 9V batteries taped to the bottom. So much for the claim about the balloon building up a million volts on the outside.

I guess they forgot to consult your expert advice but even the cops initially believed there was a kid in the thing. How can that not be news?

*Puzzled dog look*

So, if there's a baloon floating with a child in it, the public should not be notified? That isn't interesting? Lets stop acting like cable destroyed news. There have been people stomping grapes and dressing as clowns todo the weather almost since TV news began.

Prank Call of Cthulhu: So much for the claim about the balloon building up a million volts on the outside.

It's not from the battery, it's from static electricity. It's easy to generate that level of potential.

Burn_Atlanta: Anyone want to bet there isn't some bottom-feeding TV exec already trying figure out a way to get these clowns a show?

Well, I don't know. People don't like to be tricked, especially when it involves something as emotionally-charged as an injured/dead child. The Heene family is probably not going to get a reality show, just because everyone hates them so much now.

Plus, they were already on the "crazy" list with most of the networks.

You know what? This whole thing should be spun into a cautionary tale about reality TV. Anyone who desires that spotlight should have to wear a big, red letter W for Attention Whore and should be avoided like they're carrying a Swine Flu/Plague hybrid.

I read something today that said that the Heene's now feel like they're being "persecuted" or "mobbed" by the media or some other bullshiat like that. Guess what numbnuts...if your cunning plan had been thought through even the teensiest little bit you would have realized that even if your hoax succeeded in bringing you the reality TV circlejerk you so desperately craved your family would have eventually ended up in the same exact place...hounded by the press for your stupid antics. Your kids would have (and now have) ended up in the same exact place as the poor Gosselin kids...growing up in front of cameras because they were unfortunate enough to have been born to stupid, media-whore parents. And you damn well should have seen it coming, so don't cry about it now...you got exactly what you wanted. I have zero respect or pity for anyone except the kids in this situation.

Oh wait Little Jessica was an Allman brothers song. I am thinking of Baby Jessica. That's the name of the kid the trailer bound parents stuffed into the drainage pipe. That dumb little biatch started the downward spiral of backtardward reality and TV melding into one incongruous blog of shiat.

/Little Jessica was not an Allman brothers band song. that was a joke

Once it was on the ground, I was like wait a minute. Couldn't tell how big it was before then.

I was also skeptical when a section of the balloon was deflated. There was no weight in the thing.

My opinion
The parents knew the entire time that he was not in the balloon. Said there was a gondola attached. One look at it on the TV would have been enough to say that he wasn't with the balloon as there was no gondola. For that reason alone I thought "scam" especially after I found out they were on some trashy TV show. What the kid said afterward just confirmed it for me.
