Probably pissed off the pilots because they were using NVGs at the time. Hope the old man can sue them for false arrest. It's not like he used a frickin' laser on them.

I don't care what he did, if you run a night drill above a civilian area, prepare for people to freak out on you. The RAF is lucky he didn't just pull out a shotgun on their ass....

...arrested him on suspicion of endangering an aircraft by dazzling the pilot.

If a trained military helicopter pilot could be dazzled by a hardware store flashlight then he should be effing grounded. Damn pussy.

Well hell, if some helicopter starts hovering over my house with no warning, yeah, I'm likely to go get some lights and try to see just what it's up to.

The external flash for my camera cost more than ten times as much as his torch. I bet I could take out a British jet fighter or two with that.

FTFA: 'Don't tell the Taliban that all they need is an eight-quid torch to bring down multi-million-pound high-tech gunships,' he said.

No, no, no. That's exactly what you tell them. Makes them a very easy target.

I was going to say if it was a Sea King helicopter, all you'd have to do to bring it down is look at it funny.

Alas, it was an Apache helicopter. Maybe a bucket of sand would do the trick.

2009-10-18 11:18:13 PM
Around here, it'd been put down in a barrage of gunfire with fears that those godless liberal commies were invading. At 10 feet, even the young'uns could have gotten in some nice shots.

Sounds like all the enemy needs is some laser pointers or flashlights and some of the world's most advanced military will be defeated.

Forget dogfighting and such, just mount some high-beams and watch 'em drop like flies.

I bet Gem Sweaters would take him down.

That's pretty heavy, how does it fly?

I'm curious... what would happen if you threw a bundle of rope at a helicopter... or a chain. Would is get blown back, screw up the blades or get tangled. If it's only 10 feet away you could easily throw something at it.

"Mr Merriott was taken to Bury St Edmunds police station where he was questioned and held in a cell for nine hours before being bailed pending further inquiries. The torch was also seized by officers."

If you decide not to post bail then... what they just keep you in jail. He could have made a bigger point by just staying in there at the governments expense. Plus it would have drawn more media attention.

If it's not very heavy and thrown with a lot of force, I'd assume it'd get knocked down, as long as the blades were spun up.

You should test it on your ceiling fan first with 10' of 1/4" shot peen galvanized chain while standing directly underneath.

I'm not sure what shot peen galvanized chain is. All I had lying around was razor wire. Looks like I'll be doing some dry-walling next week. ;)

When my father was alive, the Canadian Navy decided to have training exercises right offshore of his seaside home. The sounds shook his windows so hard that the expensive multilayer panes of glass kind of separated in the middle and got cloudy.

It ended up with him shooting potatoes from a potato gun at any ship that got close enough for target practice. The potatoes never hit the ship, couldn't shoot far enough, but it made him feel better. I think he sued them and they finally paid for his windows.

I just want to be clear:

If the terrorists want to take down the helicopter, all they need is this?

the daily mail never works for me.. i'm not sure if it's due to ad block or firefox or what.

and srsly, 10 feet from his house? that would pretty farking loud.. i don't think you'd need a flashlight to see it either

2009-10-19 12:28:34 AM
It sounds like the fact that the helicopters didn't crash and burn because they flew 10' over civilian housing while being attacked by an old man holding a flashlight should have been a successful mission.

2009-10-19 12:30:20 AM
This is bogus, I saw Hogan's Heroes..

Shine a light up at an aircraft, they're liable to drop down radio parts, some penicillin, or a box of fake diamonds that looks like it's worth a million dollars. Why can't we take a shot at that sort of loot?
