Are you nuts? These are the people who think that community service = commosocialfascism. Gimme a farking break.

Besides, biatching's a lot easier than doing something productive.

It's OK Republicans, you can relax. No actual work will be required. Just continue to piss, moan, say 'no', and do nothing. The grown-ups will clean up your mess, as usual.

Whatever criticisms I have Obama, I love the way he deals with wharrgarblers. He ignores them for months while they succumb to mass hysteria and then, when their rage has reached nuclear levels, he drops a snark bomb that completely deflates their talking point.

Now, to the non-Democrats who may be watching today -- (laughter) -- I want everybody to know we believe in a strong and loyal opposition. I believe in a two-party system where ideas are tested and assumptions are challenged - because that's how we can move this country forward.

Well, I believe a two-party system exists, but both our electoral system and the resulting two-party system is seriously flawed.

Better would be to have proxy voting or some form of proportional representation. A multi-party or non-partisan system would be better than our current one.

/as a side note, the more I learn about William Simon U'Ren of Oregon, the smarter I think he was. I wish he were still around so I could buy him a beer.

Those are not Republicans. Those are hate-filed bigots who would latch onto to anything and anyone that gives a voice to their hatred.

I would say that the two are not mutually exclusive. I do not believe that all Republicans are bigoted morons because I work with a lot of Republicans and they are quite civil but my customers...well, that's another story.

Check out this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qzeECSpIl4c

I filmed this several months back. The Westboro Baptists were protesting in front of the White House with their usual insanity, and there was a gay-straight alliance group there from GW. There was also a large group of Teenage Republicans from Maryland led by a 17 year-old named Rory McShane.

He was a self-described redneck, born-again Christian from rural Maryland. He proceed to tell me how his interpretation of the bible is that God loves everyone; the Westboro people, his Republicans, and his new gay friends while his group cheered him on.

The kids are all right. The adults are just going down kicking and screaming.

Applies on both ends of the spectrum. You can lay the vast majority of our inability to move past problems at the feet of the status quo, and the Boomers / Greatest Gen who are fighting tooth and nail to keep it.

Truth. I guess I am stuck in the long view lately. It still shocks me that so many people on or nearing Medicare can oppose equal medical availability for all Americans.

"F*ck you, got mine." It's one of the oldest stories. If you can't move forward (which gets tougher and tougher as America stratifies), push everyone below you down and it looks like progress. See also: black support of Prop 8.

We could call it "The Electoral College".

How about we name this one "The House of Representatives"? It has a nice ring to it for some reason.

The black vs. gay Prop 8 thing was largely debunked.

That is not to say there are not real issues between the gay and black communities. I live in Washington D.C. and I see the tension between them almost every day, but I don't think it is as black and white (pardon the pun) as people are making it out to be.

Yaaaaaaaawwwnn. Even you know this is weak sauce; otherwise, you wouldn't have gone after it so half-heartedly.

America- love it or leave it, pal. Personally, I think national service ought to be mandatory to vote. Like in "Starship Troopers", the book. Community service, the military, the PHS, AmeriCorps, etc, etc. If you want to vote, you should have to work for it.

Apparently this is ripe material for a homosexual joke from you, though... I can only chalk it up to projection.

Yah, I wasn't exactly trying to make it out as "TEH BLAX R Y WE GOT PROP 8!!!1!". It's more of what you said, that the black community at-large doesn't wholeheartedly support equality for all, when "all" includes a group that they find unsavory.

That doesn't really have anything to do with being black. One of (if not the) biggest factors in opposition to gay marriage is church attendance, and blacks have a noticably higher percentage of regular church attendance. They're more likely overall to be fiscal liberals and social conservatives (like many minorities).

And without a strong black church community, the civil rights movement may never have gotten of the ground. Life is so weird sometimes.

Absolutely. And a big part of that problem is white, entitled gays such as myself. It is very easy to point at the black church leaders who came out against D.C. marriage and call them bigots, but when have we ever engaged their community?

We don't seek out their opinions. We have no care or concern over the issues they face daily as a community. We just move in, buy up the depressed property, open up a few Starbucks/hair salons/organic groceries and ignore them until they are priced out of the neighborhoods they and their parents grew up in.

Then we biatch when they oppose gay rights. That simply cannot continue.

Are black churches not a part of the black community? Or black churchgoers?
