The TSA is staffed by police academy dropouts. They're the sort of person who wants to become a cop to bully people, but were unable to hide that fact from the academy trainers. This story doesn't surprise me in the least.

Let me get this straight. A woman with an admitted anxiety disorder overreacted to a less than ideal situation?

2009-10-16 03:58:16 PM
That writeup was so over-dramatic and over-emotional I thought she was writing the script for Ransom 2: Electric Boogaloo.

Lady, I'm sorry that happened to you, but would you kindly STFU? You're giving me a headache.

She really needs to stay the fark away from airports.

We all do.

Asa Phelps: A woman with an admitted anxiety disorder overreacted

Look, I don't have kids. I don't even LIKE kids. But I would say a woman who has her toddler taken from her arms is probably not overreacting by being upset.

Now, the drama about after she got her kid and she passed out and all that, I don't care about. But she is NOT overreacting about the kid being taken away.

I think I would have skipped the flight and spent some time screaming at the TSA supervisor.

Dude, if any person abruptly took my infant/toddler and walked out of my sight with him, while other "authority figures" were telling me to sit down and shut up, I would freak the f*ck out and own some TSA ass. Go ahead, arrest me. No jury in the world would convict me.

I'm not taking the TSA's side here. I am not saying the TSA used even a modicum of common sense. I'm not even saying the TSA was justified in what they did. I AM saying this lady is a grade A drama queen and probably cannot function in society without major reliance on others.

Asa Phelps: Let me get this straight. A woman with an admitted anxiety disorder overreacted to a less than ideal situation?

I'm not a woman and I don't have an anxiety disorder but I would have gone ballistic if some farking rent a cop tried to take one of my infant children out of my sight against my will. The very thought makes my blood boil.

I bet you would get that kind of common sense that told you that an attention whoring flipout would do nothing but make things worse, then you would pull yourself together because you knew it would be the best thing for your kid. You would find a way to calmly voice your concerns without inciting someone you already know is stupid, and none of this would ever become so overblown.

BTW, can we officially nuke this airport from orbit yet?

I'm quite certain it's the worst airport on the planet.

maybe next time she flies she won't walk through a metal-detector while carrying metal

No, Philly is. Atlanta's second though.

The TSA are morons, but that chick is nuts.

As a mother and grandmother I can sympathize with this woman's horrible ordeal. That said, a child that is big enough to yell "MOMMY" is too big for a pacifier.

It was a mistake. Protocol dictates that the "offender" go back, check their pockets, and try again. I've done it, at least 300 people that I've seen go through the line (I travel too much)have done it. You take off your huge belt buckle, take your Blackberry out of your pocket, whatever, and go through again. I have never seen a TSA agent mess with anyone. Seriously. There MAY be something that people do to incite the TSA agent's ire.

No, I'd say there's absolutely no way on God's green Earth that he's taking my kid, and if he wants to pat him down, he can do it in front of me. If he doesn't like that, I encourage him to get the authorities and I'll contact my ridiculously expensive and litigious attorney.

She was tweeting the event (according to the comments on the website)- I don't think her panic was a real as her hyperbole.

I truly believe this could have been avoided beforehand.
People that have panic attacks are weak, they already know they have a mental illness and they should prepare for stressful situations beforehand.

You do not take a child away like that. It summons up a primal parental instinct that will tear your face off first and ask questions later. That was a really bad call on their part.

It's great to know that there are folks like R.A. Danny in the world who seem to think that people should be able to control whatever life throws at them, regardless of whether or not they're mentally prepared to deal with it.

Since mothers have instinct to protect their children, all the lower functioning and stronger functions should be completely suppressed because not instinctively protecting the child protects the child from a strange man taking them from their mothers arms.

Got it.

Someone with a mental condition that is able to control it through medication still has a mental condition.

I stuttered as a kid. I reacted by rehearsing possible answers to questions beforehand so I didn't have to think as hard, so I wouldn't let my mind go faster than I could keep up with. This lady knew she was entering a stressful situation. She had medication, and a chance to visualize how to perform. Her kid was depending on her and she failed.

Because everyone should run through all possible scenarios in their heads and rehearse them long before going and doing whatever it is they're doing.

Got it.

I agree with you... that was kinda my point- in a snark-filled way.

I have a 4 month old, and
a. I don't think I'd let TSA Hold him.
b. You'd have to taze me to keep me from fighting said TSA agent, IF he/she walk away from me with my son.
c. I sure as hell wouldn't be worried about missing my flight as much as I'd be raising HOLY HELL with airport security.

apples to oranges. completely different parts of the brain. you have self-efficacy she does not. huge difference. you knew why you had social anxiety, your stuttering. she has an anxiety issue that's cause is not as obvious, hence no control over her anxiety.

I don't think trying to catch a flight with an infant should be stressful. Aw, hell, let's face it: Hartsfield was already stressful before the country lost its collective mind and we all had to take our shoes off and throw our bottled water out before going to the gate.
