Subby's paycheck doesn't rely on the success of touring musicians, I'm guessing.

I think that Garth Brooks ate Chris Gaines.

/The world owes you many thanks if that is true.

Garth will be popular, but not the huge success he was in the late 80's. His old fans will return, but few new ones. Too many years away without a hype machine drumming how great he is into people's consciousness. From here on in it will be fading glory.

That's what I really hate about music threads. If you only read fark then you would believe all music in the world is on par with Vogon poetry.

For instance, I'm not a big Nickelback fan, but I think that their alright. I certainly wouldn't go to any of their concerts, but I wouldn't change radio stations if they came on. For some other people, Nickelback is totally their cup of tea, and that's cool.

Anyways, Garth Brooks is a terrific entertainer and a talented musician. To say otherwise, you're simply trying make yourself look cool and failing at it.

I'm not a fan of Brooks' music, but any male celebrity willing to be an old French whore for an SNL sketch is all right in my book.

Garth Brooks is a good entertainer. I bought some of his CDs when I was a kid, and I still sing along with some of his songs if I hear them. The problem comes when people try to classify him as country. He comes from Oklahoma, he wears a hat, and he sings about rodeo, but his style is inoffensive light rock. You can complain that he implicitly gives permission for much of the terrible redneck music that poses as country today, but he (and they) are not country music.

I realize this puts him in the solidly at a bulls-eye of hatred for both fans of old school country music and fans of rock who aren't interested in hearing about the rural lifestyle he often sings about. You really have to be a walking assault on good taste to get a show in Las Vegas anyway, so this fits.

Garth Brooks earned a great deal of respect from me in 1994. The events center in my home town mistakenly booked Metallica and Garth Brooks too close together, and there wasn't enough time to tear down Metallica's set and put up Garth's. Garth could have been a dick about the whole thing and insisted his set be installed or postponed the show, but he didn't. He paid to rent Metallica's setup for the performance, and had his own guys assist Metallica's crew in tearing down and transport to their next show.

/cool story, I know

We really should have gotten to Billy Ray Cyrus a long time ago. That is a mistake that is going to haunt us for a long time.

Garth Brooks put on a good show--I saw him in Lexington KY during the height of his career (coworker won free tickets, you would have thought she won the lottery). Usually all country performers do is stand there and sing but Garth had all the lights and the big stage and was flying over the crowd. It was blowing all the rednecks' minds. Now pretty much all the country acts put on the same kind of shows.

/agree he's light pop with a twang

The return of the fat white guy in tight jeans. Nation rejoice!

2009-10-16 09:52:14 AM
Whether or not you like him, he's an excellent entertainer who puts a lot of work into making sure his fans are treated well, and everyone who wants to see him perform can. He'll perform multiple times in a city to keep ticket prices down, and he works to make sure front row seats aren't scalped out to the rich - he holds the tickets and gives them out to "regular" people just before the show. I haven't listened to any country music since about 1997 (roughly when "Sevens" came out), but I'm glad to hear he's interested in making music again, even if I doubt I'll really listen to any of it.

Marisyana: Garth Brooks put on a good show--I saw him in Lexington KY during the height of his career (coworker won free tickets, you would have thought she won the lottery).

I saw him back in '97 after my dad won tickets. He hadn't played in a couple weeks, and was winded and forgetting some words. He even slipped off the drum riser!

Still a good show, though. He had last been in Europe before he came to our small local arena. It was surprising that he would play such a small venue, but he had three sold out shows there.

What was even more shocking was when the original KISS played there a few years later. Now that was a show!

/My headline was almost exactly the same...

I'm no country fan, but I really like his stuff, some of his songs are some of the best songs about life and choices we make (or don't).

And he won me over when he was on the Muppets tonight show.

The 123 million people who have his albums would hardly qualify this article as needing a "stupid" tag. I'm delighted he's starting his comeback, and wouldn't care if he weighed 500 pounds and was 100 years old (though there might be health complications inherent in that scenario). Garth is amazing, and I can't wait to see him!

Garth is a douche.

Back in the day, he liked to spew crap about how used CD sales were taking money out of artist's pockets. He was actually part of a campaign to try and make used CD sales illegal. He even talked about it on the "Tonight Show".

Screw him.

And yet, Hank Williams is still not in the Hall of Fame.

I'm going to go against the tide here and say that I like Garth Brooks and think this is cool. Then again, I went to Oklahoma State and live in Tulsa, so it might actually be illegal for me not to like Garth Brooks. I'll have to look into that.

Also, I saw him at a Subway sandwich shop in Tulsa a few months ago, so I'm getting a kick out of these replies.

I don't think he's really worried about being THE MAN anymore. To wit:

Barbara Walters: Do you worry about taking chances?
Garth Brooks: I have more money than my grandchildren's grandchildren could spend. What do I have to worry about?

I'm pretty happy that he's coming back. I think we all knew it was going to happen at some point, right? Although I saw him twice (floor seats in Buffalo and nosebleeds in Syracuse), I don't think I'll be going to any of his shows again (woman doesn't dig country).

I'd pay to see him in Vegas. I bet he has a really entertaining show.

/I loved the Chris Gaines CD, too!

2009-10-16 12:17:25 PM
I'm not a country music fan, so I never really judged Brooks on his music. He was a good sport on SNL, and I think the Chris Gaines concept was an interesting idea that went horribly awry and turned into a joke. But I give the guy credit for trying, you know? As far as leaving the business to be with his kids, well, John Lennon did that when Sean was born. Once again, something I can respect. I'll save my hate for artists who never take chances.

/Looking at you Coldplay

I'd rather have Garth come back than, say, Britney Spears ten years from now. He has more talent and class in his little finger than today's manufactured twits have in their entire grugged out bodies.

//stayed home for his kids? fantastic
/would go to his show
