I remember when Warcraft Characters were stalwart examples of bravery, like Lothar and five knights charging headlong into like 20 bloodlusted Ogre Magi in Human 10 or so in WarCraft 2. Or Gul'dan deciding to be a dick like a real warlock and just take over the horde from Ogrim Doomhammer.

Followed it all since the beginning. The story arc was excellent at the end of Reign of Chaos and fizzled out a bit during The Frozen Throne. Then World of Warcraft loudly stated that twenty-five to forty morons could take down some of the most powerful beings in the Warcraft universe and destroyed its credibility.

It's worse than that. Almost every raid is retconned in canon (yes, the shiatty mary sue porn books are canon), to where the raid boss is soloed or maybe five-manned by a major lore character. Thousands of adventurers collaborating and progressing to their maximum experience so they can form groups of 25 to kill powerful beings is actually much more plausible.

Yeah, they broke the horde vs. alliance story so they could force them into complete conflict. They were setting up Med'an to be the new Guardian but they changed to Thrall at the last minute. But Blizzard will make it work, they always do.

People like this enjoy fantasizing about being involved in an epic struggle with a clear and easily identifiable enemy. For them, the civil war is all part of the story, a grand narrative in which they play heroes.

Of course, they never think about the millions who'd die in such a conflict. Some cases might go for the "Cozy Catastrophe" approach, where nothing really bad happens to them or the people they care about. This is a disturbingly myopic viewpoint, but one that comes naturally to humans.

Since I seem to have confused your original post, let's go through it with my previous caveat. This is a farking game- nothing more.

Civil Wars are based on emotion. They usually begin when a ruling group have teed off another group enough to believe that they have no choice but to rebel. The consequences are rarely at the top of the checklist.

Industrial capacity for all of North America bugged off with NAFTA. any rebuild would be from the ground up.

Millions would starve. Many more would die from disease, pestilence and collateral damage. Again, Civil War is based on emotion.

The rest of the world would go on and ignore what is going on unless directly threatened. The Military-Industrial Complex (Kudos, Ike) will profit by selling to both sides.

The biggest threat would come at the end, when the modern day Carpetbaggers come in and buy up anything available with the money just given to them in the Worldwide bailouts that were just extorted from all of us.

Anybody else have something to add? THEORETICALLY, of course.
