Schule initially was nervous when he found the weapon. But as the hours passed, he did what most guys would do - marvel at the mind-blowing awesomeness of finding a missile launcher.

I wish more newspaper articles were written this way.

My friends found a missile launcher in the Louisiana bayou, apparently there's a lot of area outside of New Orleans that national guard and regular military use for exercises (or did back in the 80's) and, well, shiat just gets lost or misplaced, just like in any human endeavor.

No clue what they did with the one they found, I can't even recall if it was live or used ordnance.

Why would you throw it out?

You used to be able to get those by the cartload at swap meets. It's a launch tube. The damn thing's EMPTY and LEGAL TO OWN, so this pathetic freak loses it like Church Lady and calls everybody but the A-Team. Those are no good without the rocket, which is the component covered by ATF regulations. It's a good thing he's never seen a empty casing out there, he'd probably lose his mind.

Since Ebay banned selling them, prices have gone up a bit, I bet he could get 150-200 online from a collector, it looks like it's in nice shape.

I'd definitely be in the "it's empty, it's disposable to begin with, so fark it, I'm keeping the mofo" camp.

Once everybody figures out that it would have ended up in a scrapyard anyway, the investigation will die down and the dude will be out a cool conversation piece.

For his troubles, they should really de-mil it and give it to him. It's probably just going into the surplus system anyhow..

Expended one-shot missile launcher. It's no wonder the military didn't make a big deal about it, that's not a weapon. It's the equivalent of the brass left over after firing a gun.

Thank you, I was wondering about that. Just to be clear: The thing has zero capability, it is a spent round, etc? I mean, besides throwing it at someone...

Doesn't mean they're waiting to bust him up for possession of stolen property.

The launch tubes, when loaded, are sealed. They're a one-time-use thing and must be shipped back to the manufacturer to be reloaded. I'm not even sure all models can be reloaded.

Yeah, an empty launcher is not a big deal. If it's evidence in a real incident I guess that would make it a big deal. No one can reload it without the far more strictly controlled explosive rockets.

But as it stands it's just a fiberglass tube and the only possible damage it can do is if you swing it at someone.

Maybe someone who worked at the base thought it was cool and pilfered it to make a bong out of, then decided that was a bad idea and just dumped it in the woods.

Put a "for sale" ad in the local classifieds, they'll be there in under five minutes.
