Has been for a long time. Its part of the problem. IMHO, many of the white people who hate Hip-Hop culture are just angry that they are on the outside looking in at whats "cool". What are you going to be? A goth? You gonna be a biker? A skateboarder? You gonna start a hairband? Lol. Its not cool to be white anymore and unsuprisingly, some people have a problem with that.

I love the people saying it's "divisive" to treat African American history "separately" when in fact African Americans were separated, segregated, excluded, etc. from the nation's civic, political, and cultural life for hundreds of years, marked off by their skin color as potential property. You should probably be thankful that the white role in institutionalizing and perpetuating all this oppression and inhumanity will probably not be emphasized in this museum. A truly "inclusive" history of slavery and the civil rights movement would not reflect well on most of the white people involved. (There are exceptions, of course, but the pasty-white butthurt on this thread is ridiculous.)

When you read magazines about skiing, skiing seems like the most prevalent sport in the world. Crack open a Sports Illustrated, not so much...

For a while there, yes... Hip-hop and urban culture had center stage. For a while there, flannel-clad norteastern white boys had center stage. For a while there, long-haired blue collar guys who wear mascara had center stage.

Don't mistake one more rotation in the pop culture carousel for a cultural vanquishing. Ask the Temptations and the Four Tops if you don't believe me.

Farkwaddle: Smackledorfer: MaKaM: I am against this if it ends up being as lame as the Museum of the American Indian.

I believe a native american museum named that can safely be judged by its cover.

My head hurts from trying to comprehend that sentence. And for the record, there are thousands of good native american museums around the country. They're called casinos.

That sentence is perfectly cromulent. The mockery is that apparently the name of this museum labels them as "american indians" and one would expect better out of a museum.

George Bush Presidential Library and Museum
Confederate Memorial Park
Confederate museum
Appalachian Cultural Museum etc etc.....

Why don't we just build the museum of American Culture? Why do we keep pushing the notion that color matters?

OK, here's the deal.

First, eliminate all racism from your country. 100%. Get rid of every stereotype, every last vestige of racism of any sort. Make sure that every single person in America is flawlessly colour-blind to the point that the many racist comments in this thread, for example, would be met with nothing more than confused stares.

One you do that, then you can have your big museum of everyone, and not have any need at all to recognise the specific accomplishments of a disenfranchised minority.

enforcerpsu: we will never beat racism

We will never beat racism no matter what. Racism is just one of the ideas that can make you an asshole. We'll never beat littering, violence, misogyny or gossip, either. What museums like this do is promote pride in one's heritage and understanding of the culture of others, which can help mitigate some racism and gives pleasure to people who are interested in learning about black America.

Not everything black has to be some statement about racism. While I'm sure there will be lots of material on slavery and the civil rights movement in the museum, it's not some kind of magic pill for American race relations. It's just a museum.

DROxINxTHExWIND: IMHO, many of the white people who hate Hip-Hop culture are just angry that they are on the outside looking in at whats "cool".

Hip hop is taking a beating right now. It's probably the subculture in most rapid decline. It's become bankrupt of ideas. I stopped listening to most rap music two or three years ago, after more than 20 years of being a fan and freestyling for fun. I still battle every once in a while, but I avoid hip hop nights at clubs because it's depressing :(

DROxINxTHExWIND: I don't think you're paying attention.

They're not any more. It's all mashups and old-school nights now. The last few drops of culture are being wrung out of hip hop. Everyone is waking up to the fact that rap is dance music, turntablism is a complicated guitar solo, and graffiti is so-so folk art. Breaking is still pretty amazing to me, though, but how long until there's 1st-5th position and kids are complaining about having to go to breakdance class?

In short, America has gotten tired of playing with her new toy after 30 years. Same as jazz, disco, punk, blues, drum and bass, etc.

Then you fail at comprehension.

I didn't say hip hop had disappeared. Dro said "it's not cool to be white anymore." I said "urban"/hip hop culture no longer has center stage. It doesn't. I said it's on the wane. It is. It's just one more genre now.

There was no victory... no vanquishing, no ascendance to supremacy, no triumph of black culture over white culture. There was simply a period of time in which hip-hop ruled the charts, it is no on the wane... Just as there was a time R&B ruled the charts and it waned, and a time that folk ruled the charts, and even a time when country ruled the charts, for fark's sake there was even a time when the country was fascinated with truckers, trucker music, trucker movies, and CB radios.

People get jazzed about stuff. Then they get bored with stuff. Then they get jazzed about other stuff. Then they get bored with that stuff too. We're a country that likes to wear costumes and pretend to be other people... but never for very long. For a while it was gangstas... now it's Paris Hilton.

The bigger question is why you guys would WANT it to be "uncool to be white." White people fought to improve the lot of black people. White people died to improve their lives. White people still fight to drag this country to the finish line.

So why do you want white people to be culturally marginalized? Why do you see that as some victory? Some goal to be achieved?

Because if we're opponents locked in a struggle for control of this country and its culture, then I want to know... I'll stop wasting my time fighting for and arguing on behalf of people who view me as an enemy to vanquish. I was under the mistaken impression that the point was equality, not black supremacy.

I really don't think jazz and blues belong in that sentence. While there were times when they broke into the mainstream and became cool fads, that eventually passed but the truly cool undercurrent remained. Always has, always will.

bighairyguy: ...but the truly cool undercurrent remained. Always has, always will.

The same can be said by aficionados of every genre, style and medium. The term "truly cool" is quite subjective, after all. There are people who still dance to disco, head-bang, do the Macarena, listen to jazz, even shag and twist.

bighairyguy: I really don't think jazz and blues belong in that sentence.

Of course you don't, but they do. Jazz and blues both had great ideas and were the foundation that lots of artists built on, but they're not "cool". Go to a blues or jazz club and look around you.

If anything doesn't deserve to be on that list, it's disco.

You know it's interesting. I hear a lot from Republicans that they somehow have a philosophical lock on entrepreneurship. That anyone who has created a business from scratch, or who runs a corporation, or employs people, must philosophically be Republican.

The Democratic philosophy of bigger government and higher taxes must be only the domain of those at the bottom of the social ladder who want handouts. Or folks who are guilty about allegedly not having to work for their riches, a la Hollywood celebrities.

However, the tech industry has proven to be completely the opposite. The heads of Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Apple, etc... are all deep blue. Google itself donated millions to the campaign to prevent Prop 8. Bill Gates and Steve Jobs are both avid Obama supporters.

This seems to imply that, unlike Republican's claims, one's political philosophy has little to do with being an entrepreneur, and everything to do with upbringing and culture.

This is a problem for Republicans -- if it's only heads of traditional industries that are reliably red, they're going to be in trouble as US industry continues to evolve. (Which is still predominantly headquartered in deeply blue regions.)

I really wish people would find something meaningful to identify with. Racism sucks, period. Whether you dress is up as a "cultural experience" makes no bloody difference to me.

I saw a great show on National Geographic the other day - "The Human Family Tree" This is the sort of thing we should be showing to school children. It highlighted the fact that basically, with the exception of a few very small evolutionary adaptations, we are all the same bloody thing. Skin color and all the rest don't matter. We're the same species and we're all very closely related.

Instead, we build museums so white people can feel guilty and others can take pride out of that guilt.

Lol. Jesus. You're all over the place. Where is it said or even insinuated that Hip-Hop's dominance of popular culture should be attributed to any "black supremacy" movement? Who the fark said it was "superior" to be cool? You sort of come off as insecure in your position when you attribute all of those lofty things which genre of music sells the most. Did you really have to go through the whole "white people have done shiat for the country" card? Really? White people were dragging the country over the finish line by forcing others to do the actual work? You've exposed yourself. The only one's battling for control of America is you and people like you who viewed the country's fascination with Hip-Hop as some sort of affront to you. Calm down. Nobody is trying to take your country by calling you "uncool". Thanks for showing everyone what I was talking about.

Oh, and your focus on music charts is extremely narrow. The consumer habits of music fans is not the sole determining factor in what is "cool". There are popular artist that are trend setters who never see the bottom of the Billboard Chart.

It amuses me that its always my RESPONSE to ignorance gets folks riled up, but never the ignorance that I'm responding too. You were fine with the quote that white people "dragged everyone over the finishline", but responding with the opposite position makes me a bigot towards whites?

Examine yourself.
