It's an interesting theory, but I'm wondering why would this part matter:

Dr. Nielsen and Dr. Ninomiya have proposed a kind of test: that CERN engage in a game of chance, a "card-drawing" exercise using perhaps a random-number generator, in order to discern bad luck from the future. If the outcome was sufficiently unlikely, say drawing the one spade in a deck with 100 million hearts, the machine would either not run at all, or only at low energies unlikely to find the Higgs.

Anyone?

Maybe they should be more worried that particle colliders are mating in the future, and sending their children back in time to kill the LHC, thus preventing their mating.
At least, that's what I understand from this article.

I for one, say we get a constitutional amendment banning homocolider marriage. Its the only way.

We need the amendment to state that Collider Marriage is between one linear particle accelerator and one cyclic particle accelerator.

This makes my brain hurt, and I'm in physics grad school!

What I heard on the physicist gossip grapevine is that the LHC isn't working because after it broke last year they discovered a fundamental design flaw that'll cost another few billion to fix as right now it'll never get up to the promised energy levels. No more than a rumor yet but I heard it from a few directions, so there might be some truth to the matter.

What the LHC really seems to be doing is rippling back thorugh time to repeatedly get the same story greenlit every 12 hours on Fark.

That's the gist of it, I believe. IIRC, some of the magnets aren't working properly.

So the LHC is essentially typing in "initial entry" and the filter changes it to "Boobies" and shoves it to the end of the thread?

I don't get it. Higgs particles imbue mass, thus they're everywhere and always were. The LHC isn't so much creating Higgs as hoping to isolate a few.

Were we this scared when we isolated photons or electrons, or force carrying particles?

While it is a paradox to go back in time and kill your grandfather, physicists agree there is no paradox if you go back in time and save him from being hit by a bus. In the case of the Higgs and the collider, it is as if something is going back in time to keep the universe from being hit by a bus. Although just why the Higgs would be a catastrophe is not clear. If we knew, presumably, we wouldn't be trying to make one.

My brain just inflated and imploded simultaneously. Why are physicists under the assumption that because you saved your grandfather from being hit by a bus it's not a paradox?

That's like the whole Terminator series with John Connor sending Kyle Reese back in time to save his mother, but in doing so Kyle ends up becoming his father, therefore creating a paradox in itself.

For all we know saving your grandfather might or might not create a paradox.

I see what the mods are doing there. Maybe these greenlights are being greenlit from the future?

And you'd think threads like these are the perfect time to use the 'Boobies' filter if you have an opportunity to do it...

The point is that it does not make sense if you perceive time to be linear, as we commonly do.

LegacyDL : My brain just inflated and imploded simultaneously. Why are physicists under the assumption that because you saved your grandfather from being hit by a bus it's not a paradox?

Your grandfather being hit by a bus (before having your parent) is a paradox, because if he were hit and killed by a buss, he wouldn't have had any children to sire you and you wouldn't have been able to go back in time to save him from dying.

Whereas, saving your grandfather from getting hit by a bus is not a paradox, because the very fact that you exist to save him is evidence that the bus did not kill him. So by saving him, you're not certain of creating any paradox (all you're doing is preventing him some injury, not saving his life)*

/unless, of course, your father is a peeping tom, and by saving him, you get hit instead. And then, your mother falls in love with you as she's nursing you back to health.

/Some posit that traveling back in time along your own timeline is impossible. So that if you were to travel back in time and kill your grandfather (creating a paradox in the traditional view of the universe) you would actually just be killing your grandfather in an alternate timeline that's different from the one you reside on, while your grandfather on your own timeline happily lives on to sire one of your parents.

No.

1. The LHC is only about US$6B to begin with. A few billion more? What, the cost will double?
2. They include a contingency budget in all of these for relatively minor issues like what happened.
3. There are many bitter people who weren't listened to with an axe to grind to exaggerate every problem.
4. When oversight is insane and multinational, practically nothing stays out of the press.
