Prosperosstaff: misanthropic1

Paging all *Real Christians TM to disparige their actions; could we get a *Real ChristianTM to the front lobby please?

Christian haters LOVE to use this backasswards application of the "no true Scotsman" fallacy. Since anyone can claim to be a Christian and there are no qualifications or application standards they use this to paint the entire 2.5 billion strong, varied, multi cultural, multi ethnic faith of Christianity with the acts of the few on the fringes.

So, Fred Phelps is a Christian, Adolf Hitler was a Christian and this guy is a Christian ... ergo ... since these people are "Christian" Christians must share their qualities.

Now it is obvious to any one with the intelligence of an eggplant that this is a non sequitur but it pops up again and again in internet debates about Christianity.

It amazes me how fundie Baptists take the Bible literally, hate science and books, think women are worthless beings, try to force their view on others and their pastors get lots of money by fooling ignorant people. They are somehow like the Catholics of the middle ages. No wonder they hate us Catholics so much. I too would hate a church that although far from perfect looks 500+ years more advanced that mine.

The problem with the Catholic's is that they were ingrained into civic policy, and society. Leaders, lawmakers, etc. were perfectly "ordained" by God to rule the masses. Religion is not about salvation, it's about controlling the masses.

The same sort of folks think the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are also the inerrant word of God.

The KJV is just one translation, others (Tyndale) came before and there have been many since. And what's more, much of the Old Testament is a translation of a translation, Hebrew to Greek to English. Later translations (e.g., Jerusalem) worked from original texts.

Fundamentalism of the worst sort, as if there even is a good sort.

I love how the guy in TFA referred to them as Christian Taliban. That's the first impression I had too.

We had a lot of wackadoodles like that during my forced participation in the Seventh Day Adventist Church, too. Same type of stuff - secular music = Satanic, the pope = the Anti-Christ, etc. And they always hyped up how "their faith would be tested" by lawmakers forcing them to worship on Sunday and other hideous atrocities.

When I was at parochial high school they hyped up the whole "backward masking" thing (that you can hear Satanic verses if you play Stairway to Heaven backwards, etc.) and probably a third of the student body went out and destroyed all their music cassettes and stuff. (Nevermind that the rules at the school prohibited anyone from having any sort of music, or even a radio, on campus.) It was so lame.

Now, the local SDA radio station actually plays rock-style music most of the time (with Christian lyrics, of course.) It's funny how we level-headed (for the most part) agnostics and otherwise non-conformists were eventually vindicated and most of those schools are now either closed or much more liberally run than when the anal-retentive old farts were in charge back in the 80s and prior.

Guess he never heard of recycling.

Something about burning books always pisses me off for some reason. It's like publicly stating that you voluntarily accept being an uneducated farking idiot. That everything that goes against your principles is null and void and should be forgotten as quickly as possible. It doesn't matter if it can teach one good thing but be surrounded by stuff that doesn't agree with you, it has to be burned. There isn't a surer sign of someone fighting tooth and nail against human evolution than a book burning.
A great man once said something along the lines of 'never trust anyone who only reads one farking book'.

You gotta love retailers and their "everything-must-go sales."

Baptists, Protestants, Catholics, et cetera, ad nauseum - they're all retailers and middlemen, attempting to dress up the same product, made by the same wholesaler, in a vain attempt to sell more than the next guy.

Prosperosstaff: So, Fred Phelps is a Christian, Adolf Hitler was a Christian and this guy is a Christian ... ergo ... since these people are "Christian" Christians must share their qualities.

Tell mne - where does Fred Phelps get his funding? He receives numerous, quiet donations from lots of folks who like to keep their involvement secret. (There are quite a few ersatz Christians here in the state of Washington desperate to keep their signatures on the current effort to overturn Referendum 71 secret.)

Fred Phelps is their face - he does their dirty work, and they get to turn a blind eye to his horrifying perversion.

Pope Pius XII supported and saluted Hitler. So did nuemrous Roman Catholic archbishops - after all, he was working over their competition. The current Pope was once a member of the Hitler Youth.

The Pope is supposed to be the "true" face of Catholicism, if not Christianity. Does the Pope also fall into this general castigation of "fake Christians?" If so, tell me - what identifies a "real" Christian?

2009-10-14 08:37:57 PM
Years ago, a new priest came into our community. He was a jesuit, and he used to be a missionary in Africa. For one reason or another he ended up in our small little church, and everyone started asking questions what he did there. He once told us that he, along with a group of baptists, methodists and anglican missionaries, he was doing charity work in the communities he served him, someone asked how was he able to work that out, as most other denominations of christianity hated everyone else, even us. I liked his answer.

"When you're out there, doing the Good Work you're supposed to be doing, you don't have the luxury to argue over semantics".
