Cheops: Has anyone yet mentioned that zero tolerance often equals zero thought and zero justice?

No? I get to be the first?

The odd thing is that...Florida has lightened up their zero tolerance policy. FLORIDA! They did something correct! (link)

Lansingburgh High has a zero-tolerance policy,

when it comes to common sense.

I don't get it, according to this (new window) an administrator confronted him randomly to ask if he had a weapon.

Whalen, 17, said he forgot the knife was even in his car when a school administrator confronted him in late September and asked if he had a weapon. He told them he does not carry a knife. He volunteered that he had the pocket-sized blade in his car, and walked a vice principal out his to his car, where he turned it over without thinking much of the incident.

Sentence one says he doesn't know there is a knife in the car. Sentence three he tells the admin there is a knife and then takes him to it.

I don't understand any of this.

Drizzit: I remember going through my first drug search during high school like a month after 9/11. The cops made us stand in teh hall and take everything out of our pockets.

/Guess what I had on my key chain?
//wasn't suspended

Jeez, I was even more flagrant than that. I had a Gerber Multitool in its case, attached to my belt, in plain sight, on my person, for all four years of high school. As well as a small, 1 inch knife in my pencil bag.

By this standard, I was armed to the teeth.

/Never got suspended
//teachers occasionally asked to borrow the pliers.

davidphogan: I'd argue the smartest know that taking a story like this to the media instead of the judicial system are the smartest. This young man is showing he's willing to accept responsibility for his actions, but is willing to raise hell if someone tries to screw him for being responsible.

Assuming what he told Fox News wasn't a complete lie. I don't know if I'm surprised or amused that a single source story from Fox News gets unquestionably believed by Fark.

So he has a 2-inch knife in his car. In a lockbox. Big deal.

Bet he has a 1/2 tank of gas in his car too. A few gallons of gas could do far more to damage anyone and anything in that school than his piddly ear-wax-belly-button-lint-remover of a "knife."

Why don't they suspend him for possession of a liquid explosive? Oh...because they'd have to suspend EVERYONE that drives to school.

Morans.

/that's what you get for not having an education

Retards, running schools?! Say it ain't so, Jo. Say it ain't so!

Why isn't there a spray for administrators, its not like there isn't a market.

Sgt Otter: To kill something, yes. It's the best time to bag a deer. They just woke up, are still a little sluggish, and come out to obvious feeding areas for breakfast.

Sarge, you're confusing nocturnal game animals with humans again. Deer are hunted early in the morning because they are leaving the feeding areas they spent all night in and going to bed. Its the movement. Same reason they are hunted early in the evening, they are moving toward or are already in feeding areas before nightfall.

And for all you mothers worried about "those damn hoodlums at school", raise your kids better.

"Hoodlum" isn't on the syllabus.

MBK: Everyone involved in this case (except for the kid) deserve a cock punch from everyone in a 5 mile radius.

If I were a rich guy, I would scan the internet for stories like this, then go to the school and buy the kid a new car, with insurance paid for 5 years.

Then I would taunt the administrators about how they will never make as much money as me, then cock punch them.

Either way, we need less dicks in this country and more cock punches.

Dont bring dangerous lethal weapons to school and you wont get in trouble. It isnt that hard people. The kid could have flipped out for no reason and just cut someone's head off. Whats next, would he come back on leave with his M16 and start shooting?

We should melt down all weapons of any type, destroy anything that can be used to kill someone else, then our children can be safe at school.

2009-10-13 11:44:45 PM
First, he should have demanded to know who said he had the knife. I mean, isn't it still the law tho be able to confront your accuser?

Second, when they asked to see the inside of his car, he should have said, "Get a warrant."

lajimi: davidphogan: lajimi: Whalen said he is not considering a lawsuit.

Don't worry about college, kid, you're WAY too stupid to go.

Yeah, the smartest people in our society learn to sue their way to the top. Right?

The smartest people in our society learn how to NOT be treated like doormats and make damn sure everyone knows better than to treat then as such. If you make a few bucks along the way, so be it. I didn't invent the system.

/Predator or prey
//The choice is yours

Yeah, it's a real sue or be sued world out there... not for the faint of litigation.

monkeyman3875: How are you going to kill someone with this

1) Tie a lanyard around knife keyring loop
2) Shove knife up victim's rectal cavity
3) Shake victim vigorously causing scissors and knife blade to open
4) Yank hard and fast on lanyard

/Old, loose, knife mechanisms would probably work better

2009-10-13 11:45:54 PM
That kid should be behind bars, or on his way to Iraq to make amends for his aberrant behavior!

2009-10-13 11:46:05 PM
Geeze, in my day the teachers would confiscate it for the end of the day/month/year depending on its severity, and give it back to you providing it never comes back.

I used to (and still do) always carry a knife, with a blade no longer than three or four inches. It's a tool, give me a break.

2009-10-13 11:46:07 PM
That ain't shiat. I was harrassed for half an hour by the transit police for having a 1/2 inch pocket knife (left over from work at a grocery store) in a holster in my belt. Thirty farking minutes even after explaining the situation and apologizing (and holding my hands in the air). Power trips piss me off.

davidphogan: This young man is showing he's willing to accept responsibility for his actions, but is willing to raise hell if someone tries to screw him for being responsible.

HIS ACTIONS??? His actions show no malicious intent. The school administration attacked him for keeping TOOLS in his car! The only way to battle zero tolerance is WITH zero tolerance. School administrators need to be reminded from time to time who they work for and what their limits are. They must ALSO be held accountable for their actions and when those actions cause harm to a student who, by all accounts is a good kid caught up in a witch hunt it's time to strike back. That's what courts are for.

2009-10-13 11:58:16 PM
AlwaysRightBoy, no they don't. It is because of liberals, soccer moms start it, but it takes a liberal administrator to appease the mother bears when it comes to things that can be regarded as "weapons".

lawsuits have done more to change America and its citizens than guns, knives, slingshots, firecrackers, flaming dry cleaning bags, and lots of other thingies.

it's the damn lawyers and their civil lawsuits that are killing this country.

monkeyman3875: How are you going to kill someone with this

Very carefully, you'd have to stab it through the jugular vein or maybe the carotid artery & then twist.

The hardest part would be penetration, unless the tip was dramatically sharpened.

So, while it can poke someone's eye out in a heartbeat...so can a pencil.

Good bye civil liberties, hello overreacting post columbine parents.

This homo is laughing at your shenanigans and feeling smug.

'"zero tolerance" is for manufacturing quality control, not dealing with young humans.'

When I was in grade school all the boys had pocket knives in school. In junior high we were allowed only during some field trips. In high school, ZOMG knives are evil policies were in force. It was depressing to watch the the descent into the rule of the mamas boys who hid behind policies that freed them from decision making and responsibility. That is what zero tolerance policies are for.

mongbiohazard: It WAS a good, sane, safe option... and apparently those have no place in our public schools. Instead, they made an example of a good, sane, safe over-achieving kid. "See kids, this is what happens to you when you use common sense instead of paranoia. We punish you. Aren't you scared of terrorists, abortion doctor killers and kidnappers? They could have pocketknives in their cars and then they'd come for you and EVERYONE!"

Who the kid was has no relation to what the kid did. If he'd had the knife on him on campus, fark him. Throw the book at him like anyone else. The only reason I support the kid in this case is that he kept the knife in his car.

I would have killed for a woodcarving class. There was only art, music, agriculture, cosmetology and culinary (circa 2006 when I graduated). Oh and various sports. Legend has it that my HS once had a shop class and a mechanic class. If you were honors you were expected to fill your electives with "smart" electives (two AP sciences, histories, what have you) and if you were one of the regular students it was sports or agriculture for you. Music and Art was frowned upon.

\sigh

It winds up in the negatives due to the blatant nature and clear over-effort. It actually achieves the opposite effect of a well-crafted troll by calling clear attention to the fact that the troll is, in fact, trolling. Were the OP shooting for meta, then I would give it a fair to middling grade, but this was clearly just a piss-poor attempt. If negative's not an option, 0 would be the only earned grade, God have mercy on his soul, etc.
