FTFA: The 19-year-old's terrifying ordeal began when the liquid quickly set around her skin, creating temperatures of up to 60C.

FT2007A: The 16-year-old girl is said to have suffered third degree burns as the plaster set.

so unless she aged 3 years in 2, and did it a second time, Oh wait that would still make it NEW

Side Note: Exact same school

AND FT2007A: It said there had been a similar incident a few years ago, in which a pupil had lost two fingers.

How many students have to loose fingers at this school??

I don't care how old she was, holy shiat!
....That's what you get for being an art fag.

60 C may not be boiling hot, but being burnt has a lot to do with how fast heat is transferred, not simply how high the temperature is. Being in contact with a good heat conductor for extended periods of time could result in really bad burns.

glwtta: The way the article is written, you'd think she was 8 years old - she's freaking 19!

Seriously, "youngster"?

That was so weird; It's not like they needed to exaggerate her youth in order for readers to sympathize.

Yeah... every grumpy chemistry teacher in the world is clipping this article out of the paper to hang on their "why do I need to learn science if I'm going to be an artist" bulletin board.

Yup. The art teacher should have known and stopped it. That said, how could they not find a sink, stick her hands and bucket into it with cold water running, and start in with hammer & chisels?

Exothermic reaction is exothermic. The plaster itself was generating the heat as a byproduct of the chemical reaction, and the heat won't stop until the reaction is complete. Pouring water on it would only cool the top inch or so of material, and from TFA (and the borderline NSFW pic accompanying), it looks like she plunged her whole hands into the stuff. Water wouldn't have helped at all.

lenfromak: Geez, I just thought of those kits where you can make a mold of your unit. And, how I'll never buy one now.

Usually, those use some sort of alginate (similar to that used for dental impressions)...that dries quickly, and is cool at all times. The container supports the alginate, then you pour the plaster in the area where what you molded USED to be.

Okay, so the article is light on details, but FTFA:

"The horror happened after the youngster "misunderstood" instructions from her art teacher. She was meant to put her hands in nearby wet clay to make moulds."

Either she wasn't paying attention, the teacher wasn't clear enough on which bucket to stick her hands in and which to stay away from, or the girl is an idiot anyway. Sure, maybe you could argue that it was dangerous to put some plaster of paris out there during this exercise, but I dunno, I pretty much have to put most of the blame on the girl from the little evidence the article provides.

When did 19 year-olds become "youngsters"? She's 19, fercrissake. She can vote and own property. She's an adult. Granted, she's an adult who's stupid enough to shove both her hands into a vat of plaster of Paris, but an adult nonetheless.

Thank God there were no 18 year-old toddlers in the room. That WOULD have been a tragedy.

Yes, he did correct the materially false statement. But we're not just talking about a point of scientific misunderstanding. We're talking about a real person here. A person most gravely injured, and made greatly limited by that injury. The lack of care in tone and tenor, as well as the silence on the reason why we are conversing here causes his statement to fall upon the "jerk" side of things. I know, this is Fark, what did I expect? Given the circumstances, I expected (in a moment of weakness) for Anonymous to remember that (s)he, too, is human. Simply being right on a material point does not always justify acts or speech.

THIS

Seriously people, if you're going to mold anything on a live body and don't want 3rd degree burns, use Alginate. Nice and cool, and sets up in a few 5-10 minutes. It's a disposable mold (can't store it since it's algae based, starts to, uh, mold)but it'll stay good long enough to get a couple of plaster parts (heh) out of.

It didn't "literally burn off her fingers;" it "literally cooked her fingers," which forced their amputation.

If "BTech in Art" means a college level course, then the student should have some concept of materials. It seems like the teacher didn't draw enough attention to the very real danger of plunging ones hand into unset plaster of paris, but... c'mon. The student should have at least known the basic concept of creating a mold and filling it with the plaster and not vis versa.
