A lot of times before we get to the Headline of the Week, we do a little writeup on media trends, but this week we have a happy milestone to announce. Today, our most prolific submitter--you know him as 40below--passed 10,000 greenlights. Congratulations, sir, you've accomplished a feat that is difficult to imagine even among the regular submitters.

Considering that his account was created back in February 2004, that means he's averaged about 5.5 greenlights a day, every day since he joined. You may use your own adjectives for that, but I'm going to pick impressive.

While the importance of the Fark community cannot be downplayed, the submitters are often overlooked unless they come into a popular thread and take the occasional well-deserved bow. It's easy to recognize the popular posters because they're so visible, but the submitters provide so much of the entertainment value here. They're the ones that not only find fresh oddball and weird news stories, but then go the extra mile by crafting the headlines that have made nearly everybody here laugh at inappropriate times in the office, occasionally during meetings, and have made us all spit out our beverage of choice onto our keyboards.

Everybody who contributes to Fark in some small way makes this place better. And today, I want to give a nod to somebody who has helped make Fark into something special.

Thank you, 40below. Good work.

And you thought just passing a kidney stone was painful...

2009-10-12 09:48:21 PM
It's a Streetlight: Impressive. Or maybe just pathetic. Not sure which...

It be impressively pathetic, why pick one?

2009-10-12 09:49:11 PM
All this input from admins is nice, but you can't greenlight stuff like this and say it requires any sort of wit, talent, or ability to ferret out unusual stories. The headline is a quote taken straight from the article, and the article isn't even that interesting. Its purpose is basically to stir up another fat thread.

This tactic is especially obvious when you have headlines with poor spelling or grammar. Sometimes that's enough to get a sh*tton of people into the thread just to b*tch about how stupid submitter is.

/but what do I know? I'm just jealous.

2009-10-12 09:54:16 PM
So, 40below....what do you do in your spare time?

10 000 greenlights is not something to be awfuly proud about.

I, for one, would like to thank 40below.

I sure I've snorted my drink many times at his headlines.

Can someone point me to where he came in here to take a bow? kthnxbi. Don't know him but clearly he's put his money where his mouth is.

/What's the next highest number of greenlights?

2009-10-12 10:20:53 PM
Unfreakable: Any regular submitter here will tell you that it's a numbers game. You put a lot of links out there, and you get into a rhythm. Regular submitters have a few advantages over other people submitting here. First and foremost is numbers: they put more out there, and that increases their chances. Also, regular submitters tend to read through the previous day's headlines so that they don't waste time submitting a story that was already greenlit. There's also a certain rhythm with anybody that submits a lot. Google news alerts make it easy to find obscure stories that aren't on the main page of any websites. Five greenlights a day is nearly 2000 links in a year. That's not an impossible number to achieve at all, it just takes dedication.

This.

My redlight to greenlight ratio is so out of whack that it is probably 1000:1. There have been times where I have had headlines that were so damned good I almost jizzed myself, but it had been green before and mine went red.

I, on average, submit around 15-20 headlines a day. On some days that gets up to 40 headlines in one day.

The most I have hit green in one day is five. I have had a few days where four went green, but the usual multiple amount in one day is three. Most of my days I get one green.

One of the first things I do when I hit TotalFark (or even Fark when I can't afford TotalFark) is I read the queue or the headlines for the areas I tend to submit in. Gives me an idea of what is out there and what I can followup on if need be.

I also have many, many, many RSS feeds set up from various news sites. I have all the usual like CNN and Fox News, but a lot of small town or obscure news sites as well.

I have also found my niche, the types of headlines that I am good at. Yeah, I will throw the usual meme or cliche in there if the headline calls for it. However my niche (or niches) are generally headline in song, serious snark, or too smart/obvious to be funny but you still laugh at it anyways.

Finding a niche for your headlines is a good way to get not only a greenlight but multiple greenlights. It took me the better part of three years to get a greenlight, and that was after submitting crap after crap, but by finding my niche I was able to get good at a certain kind of headline and increase chances of a green because my headlines got better with each submission

But what do I know? I am just some guy who submits stuff. I am not a Mod or Admin, and I don't cull the queue at any point in time. I could be way off base on why my headlines get green.

2009-10-12 10:35:22 PM
I wonder, do the mods who decide see who subby is before deciding to greenlight? I've always been curious about that.

Wow, amazing! I had no idea!

sorry didn't post this earlier, but let me be first one to say that UNFREAKABLE speaks the absolute truth or at least as far as I can tell. I started submitting less than 2 years ago, and got a bit over 2,400 greens, and i've never felt for a moment there was actual favouritism going on, not even on wether or not you're a totalfarker or not, heck, I got my first 1,000 or so when I was still a liter. The only advantage you have as a TF'er is you get to see the stuff that's already been greenlit but not yet posted. And you also get to see the redlit stuff that were good stories, but the submitter totally farked the headline...
thing is, people get so sensitive about getting redlit but most of the time, it has nothing to do with your writing. You just submitted something already posted or just not fark-worthy... That's the best advice I can tell you, ask yourself if you see this posted on fark, while keeping the "It's not news, its..." mindset. Then, if you can, make a funny

Some farkers where talking about odds before.. as far as im concerned, it depends where you're aiming. If you're aiming at the main page, that's a bit tougher. For me,i'd say 1 out 5 (there's some days, 10 are submitted and it all comes back red, some other 4 submitted and 2 come back, for example).. . But on the other tabs, it's a bit easier

Anyways, got drunk at this karaoke bar tonight, cheers again 40Below, this beer's for you

2009-10-12 10:41:49 PM
One angle you can play is to think of a headline first then search for a recent news item to match it with. My first green was done that way.

Your dog wants variety.

DFWPhotoGuy: 40Below is TMLO's alt. Just come out and admit it already.

Hah!

I have to debunk this, because I gotta give 40below the props he deserves.

Congrats on 10,000+ greenlights, 40below, and many, many more!

It's all a conspiracy. You're all out to stop me from getting greenlights. It's because I'm not cool, isn't it? It's okay, you can tell me. I can handle the truth.

I don't doubt that trollish headlines are a good strategy, but it's definitely not the only way to get a green, and I'm don't think it's necessarily the best way.

I guess it depends on the subject. I usually only submit sports headlines because I want to have a particular discussion. If I were to submit a politics thread I would obviously need to troll one side or the other, or both.

Big deal. Walt Chamberlain slept with 10,000 women. Let's see a Farker pull that off.

2009-10-13 12:07:21 AM
Thanks all. Let me just say this is a really stupid milestone that will not appear on my resume and which has not, and will never be, mentioned to my friends, coworkers, wife, children, current or prospective employers or in fact, any living human being. I'm THAT proud of wasting THAT much time doing this.

That said, I like news, I like Fark and if I have time to waste, I might as well waste it here as on UpskirtJapanesePantyTeens.com or living in TFD. (I can't help noticing you people manage to find time in your busy schedules for the last five years to argue the finer plot points of Futurama, Neil Peart's oeuvre or the relative quality of the Toronto Maple Leafs' third line in threads, and at length, so I'll be taking no lectures in efficient use of one's online time from here.)

And for you TF Troofers who insist it's a conspiracy, my rejected links, let me show you them. I wish I could, but Fark's server puked all over itself on three different occasions when I tried to call them up, but my approval rate is running by guesstimate, 3:1 based on various unfavourable factors such as time of day, the day of the week, who else is submitting and which admin is driving the queue. I might have a lot of approved links but the admins have rejected more of my headlines than of anyone else's on Fark ever, and I'm sure they'll back me up on that.

But thanks to the staff - present and departed - and Drew, for both putting up with me with only the occasional timeout and making a site that pisses people off but does in a smart enough way to make them come back every day. If it wasn't fun - and I don't think any of the top submitters have any idea why it is - the only thing in the queue would be TFDs and Caturday threads and we'd have fled to other sites along with everyone else.

And that's all I will ever have to say about this.

Seems to confirm what I always thought, that the greenlights are fixed and that a handful of total farkers get them all or almost all. Living 6 hours ahead of the east cost never been greenlit and basically have given up on being greenlit.

This is my experience: The headline must be funny. The headline must be funny. The headline must be funny.

Some of my funny headlines have been greenlit. Most of my funny headlines are not greenlit.

Maybe you are just not funny.

Read his autobiography, A View from Above. He claims to have slept with more than 20,000 women in his lifetime, which would be more than one a day from the time he was 15. Some people would rather have the greenlights, I guess.

And my bad for mistyping Wilt as Walt.

So many responses.

Hello children,
Life in Tahoe was fun. Bartending for 9 years was fun. When I turned 30 I could not wait to have weekends off. Ten years of that was fun!

To all of you that thinks a season pass is the same as having a kid, you are so lost. You think you are so smart. Some day you will look back. You will look back and see the retard you are.
