A lot of times before we get to the Headline of the Week, we do a little writeup on media trends, but this week we have a happy milestone to announce. Today, our most prolific submitter--you know him as 40below--passed 10,000 greenlights. Congratulations, sir, you've accomplished a feat that is difficult to imagine even among the regular submitters.

Considering that his account was created back in February 2004, that means he's averaged about 5.5 greenlights a day, every day since he joined. You may use your own adjectives for that, but I'm going to pick impressive.

While the importance of the Fark community cannot be downplayed, the submitters are often overlooked unless they come into a popular thread and take the occasional well-deserved bow. It's easy to recognize the popular posters because they're so visible, but the submitters provide so much of the entertainment value here. They're the ones that not only find fresh oddball and weird news stories, but then go the extra mile by crafting the headlines that have made nearly everybody here laugh at inappropriate times in the office, occasionally during meetings, and have made us all spit out our beverage of choice onto our keyboards.

Everybody who contributes to Fark in some small way makes this place better. And today, I want to give a nod to somebody who has helped make Fark into something special.

Thank you, 40below. Good work.

It is curious Fark would choose to revel in this milestone. While I've no doubt 40below is exceedingly clever and witty, as well as a devoted Farker, 10,000 greenlights prove the headline approval process is nowhere near as democratic as a casual Farker might assume it to be. Then again, Fark has never professed to being a democratic environment.

Unfreakable: bradkanus: uh... The dude isn't funny at all proving that he knows the guy who greenlights shiat.

Just like on Jim Rome's radio show, you get your shiat read if you know someone.

I see many more clever submissions out there that don't go green and it's because certain people have certain friends and certain shiat like htis happens.

Being a totalfarker has its advantages - you get to see everything that didn't go green and there's lots of clever, funny stuff the lites don't get to see.

You can believe it all day long, but you'd be wrong.

Yup. I've had some unfunny ones go green despite funnier competition. Just like I've had the reverse happen; take a look at my Helen Keller one up there, someone had a more politically-oriented one that was amusing, but you never know what will go green.

p the boiler: can we get a list of everything he submitted? Since I have yet to find the secret sauce (and I haven't shelled out $5 yet)

I've got a measly 4, 3 of which as a liter. *shrug*

I have a confession: 40below is one of my alts

I submit a lot of stuff to Fark, obviously. But there's no way in hell I could come up with the volume he does, even if I quit shaving and showering. I can't find that much interesting stuff to read!

Give the man props!

2009-10-12 03:59:28 PM
My congratulation got deleted?! HOW RUDE!

As far as headlines go, it's a meritocracy.

And we get about 5.5 "Best _____ you'll see all day".

2009-10-12 04:00:12 PM
i wonder what his percentage is for green lights against denied headlines.

2009-10-12 04:01:50 PM
This site really has become one big circle jerk, hasn't it?

2009-10-12 04:01:52 PM
congrats to a fellow limestone citier.
I'll buy you a pint at the Toucan next time I'm down.

that's ok. We'll save you the biscuit.

Are those Canadian or Zimbabwean greenlights? What's the current conversion rate?

2009-10-12 04:03:41 PM
Yeah...but he's Canadian, so it's really only about 9,600...

2009-10-12 04:04:21 PM
Who?

2009-10-12 04:04:57 PM
Canada has an army?

2009-10-12 04:05:46 PM
Did I get acomment on here before this was greenlit?

2009-10-12 04:06:29 PM
I guess we could all congratulate 40below, but I see great tragedy in this accomplishment. As much as I like Fark, we all know that this site is just a conglomeration of worthless news articles that only serve to reduce the collective productivity of mindless office zombie drones like myself. As a result of his actions, cancer research has been set back several years. At his headline submission rate, we may never discover the cure for cancer as unproductivity reaches critical mass.

I should know, as I have future-cancer. So technically, 40below is killing me slowly. Thanks, a$$hole.

Kwality Assurance: I moved to Tahoe with some friends when I was 21. I moved away at 24. One of my friends is still there. I was talking to him about a year ago and asked him when he was going to leave. In the last 15 years I'd graduated college, got a nice career, got married, had a kid, bought a house, saved for retirement, etc. I asked him what he'd done besides waiting table at Apple Bees. He said he'd bought 15 season passes at Heavenly and another 15 season passes at the golf course. He's now 41 and life is just passing him by. Soon we'll both be 65 and I'll be enjoying my retirement spending at least a month a year on vacation in Tahoe while he'll probably still be my waiter.

Do you see what I'm getting at 40below?

Then again, maybe you're just one of those 800lbs people I see on the Health channel that is confined to your house. If that's the case, keep up the good work!! :)

Let's see... 15 season passes at Heavenly or marriage, mortgage, and kids. If I could go back, I'd take the passes.

2009-10-12 04:07:56 PM
This reminds me of the ending of Guitar Hero South Park.

2009-10-12 04:08:16 PM
40Below is obvious too busy submitting to post in here.

2009-10-12 04:09:37 PM
That's what, 9,000 Canadian?

2009-10-12 04:09:55 PM
Mr. Murder: 40Below is obvious too busy submitting to post in here.

He probably is embarrassed.

2009-10-12 04:10:16 PM
way to go 40below!

and..WTF!?!
i33.tinypic.com

can I get a cookie for most shot down submissions? lOl

2009-10-12 04:11:28 PM
Wow, now he's only a few thou behind Sports by Brooks. Ugh.

2009-10-12 04:11:33 PM
My guess is that 40below submits only pr0n.

Modmins are suckers for the Pr0n, and no need for catchy headline quotes!

2009-10-12 04:11:34 PM
Impressed. The people I see with a high # of submissions are usually just in the sports section, video section... etc... they pick as ection and stick to it. Yours are all over the place and ALWAYS hilarious. Well done.

2009-10-12 04:11:38 PM
Wow, talk about no life.

And to think I was thrilled when I got my first greenlight.

Nice jorb, 40below.

2009-10-12 04:13:12 PM
So yeah, im going to snerk about this.

Dude.........shiat

So this 40 below guy, IS fark basically. My advice, contact drew, say its a nice ad revenue generating site you got here, what with my copious submissions driving it all, but i get so tired these days, would be a shame if i had to quit.......

If hes already on the payroll then he already did this :)

Seriously, guy's friend seems to be enjoying his life. Guess what Kwal? 100 years from now you'll both be equally dead. It all resets to zero.

2009-10-12 04:14:16 PM
Congratulation, 40below, a well-deserved honor. That and about US$3.00 will buy you a decent cup of joe. Wouldn't a DMSM have been more practical?

/Keep your head down now, OK?

2009-10-12 04:15:05 PM
Not bad for a "canadian"

2009-10-12 04:15:18 PM
I submitted this with a better headline.

/Good jorb.

Dang, I've been gone longer than I thought. I remember trying to keep up with him and giving up

He's averaging 5.5 a day? I'm not even averaging that per year.

tgregory: i wonder what his percentage is for green lights against denied headlines.

Couldn't be like mine, or he'd be submitting about a thousand headlines a day.

2009-10-12 04:20:24 PM
I have one greenlight . . . sorry thing is he'll probably double his count before I double mine.

Kwality Assurance: He's now 41 and life is just passing him by

uhm... hate to break it to you, but time didn't stop for you while you went out and did all the unexciting things every other human being has done before you. So when you cure cancer or develop a way to power the world without destroying it, come back and we'll all listen to how much better you are than your friend who still lives in Tahoe.

At least I don't have to subsidize his choice to not have children with my tax dollars.

/end snark

2009-10-12 04:20:32 PM
See kids, now we all know who to ask "Who do I have to blow around here to get a greenlight?"

2009-10-12 04:21:49 PM
...still trying to figure out who you gotta fark to get greenlit...

Airfoilsguy: Good god I can't think of anything I have done successfully 10,000 times. I am 38 years old.

Step 2: Realize that you have done one thing, successfully, 10,000 times
