That's correct, they wouldn't. It would just give them more shiat to worry about.

Here's how it is: We've gotten really good at keeping all of the deadly little bugs at bay and treating the diseases they cause, but there are still billions more of them than us. Cook your food properly folks. Ground meat has the bacteria ground into the interior so cook that thouroughly, but beef steaks generally has the deadly bacteria on the outside so sear the outside and it'll kill it, while the inside is safe to eat while pink. Cut meats on different cutting boards from that which you cut veggies. Wash your veggies. Don't eat raw chicken.

With a little knowledge you can guarantee that you will kill anything that would make you sick. Don't need the goddamn 'government' to tell you where not to buy stuff. Contaminated food should be obvious to the purchaser.

Oh sure, they'll say all kinds of things to get you to let your guard down. They'd like nothing more than to continute to dupe you denim clad rubes into thinking it's okay to relax. Don't be fooled. i cook my food and follow safety procedures.
i don't like the government telling me i don't need to know something like that. since i have lupus things that don't kill the average person could be deadly to me. and i don't need to know? fark that1 the governemnt is protecting big business instead of the consumer is what it sounds like.

also the government said we don't need to know which food is genetically altered either. i feel the same way about that. the government doesn't try to find out what this shiat could do to people like me. so i would just like the information so i can do what they're not.

I knew there had to be another reason I chose to be a vegetarian other than ethics.

Seriously, I'm the worst vegetarian ever, I hate vegetables, all I eat is salad and bread. I know it's against human nature to be a vegetarian, but oh well, I just couldn't deal with the fact that I was responsible for an animal's death.

2 months and counting. I think it's pretty much permanent too, although the choices are slim I don't find myself desiring or returning to meat.

That scares me. It doesn't surprise me, though. I would hope that they'd let us know which stores and butchers bought the bad meat. You know that most meat does contain some kind of bacteria, and you can't get rid of all of it, but to not tell us, that is reckless endangerment.

Reminds me of that book by Upton Sinclair, The Jungle.

You know, I once was invited to a pig butchering party. After the inevtiable NWA comments, I accepted. That was the last time I ever ate sausage or scrapple (a SE PA fave, made of the same stuff a sausage mixed with cornmeal, formed into bricks and then sliced and pan fried.) Bacteria don't bother me so much anymore.

Yes, bacteria is not such a big deal if things are cooked right, but the USDA also has been relaxing standards and discoluse on fecal matter in products as well. And, while you may not get sick from it, the simple fact is, if you cook meat with sh!t in it, you're still eating cooked sh!t.

1996. In that case, Food Lion was engaged in a nasty labor dispute and labor-sympathetic ABC's Primetime Live planted an undercover 'employee' who tried to find violations of the health code. When that failed, she caused some violations herself, ABC filmed it and used it as 'proof' that Food Lion was violating the law. Food Lion sued ABC for fraud in planting the employee and filming surreptitiously and won 5.5 million.

Also, on a related note, egg packers have been known to "recycle" eggs--that is, when they come back to the packer after having not been sold at the stores, instead of being disposed they'll get re-washed and stuck into new cartons with later expiration dates, even though the eggs may already be expired.

That means that by the time you end up using the eggs, there may be so much bacteria in them that you could get salmonella no matter how well you cook them.

I miss the days of being a kid and licking the spoon after mom mixed up a batch of cookies...nowadays, the raw egg in the dough can make the stomache flu look like a walk in the park...

I think it's unaccpetable not to warn people when it's meat that is used in a restaurant...it's not like you can watch the chef to make sure your food is prepared correctly. I guess the rule of thumb is, don't ever eat out.

Now, on a serious note, its not the bacteria that causes the majority of problems in people who eat meats/eggs/poultry, its the various drugs/steroids/antibiotics and anti-viral medications pumped into the animals daily.

wtf? the benefits of a vegetarian diet are amazing. it's not a herd, it's being healthy. stop eating meat for a few weeks an you'll notice you wake up feeling better everyday. there is no reason to eat meat. it's not survival anymore, it's justt dominance.

Speaking as a former "Meat Man" for A&P Supermarkets I can assure you we used to repack the meat that didn't look brownish and resell it with a new exp date. All this with the blessing of our manager. This was back in 1994. I don't know if they still do this.

Tips for avoiding food poisoning:

1. Steak tartar should not look like tartar sauce.
2. Beef jerky - good. Mayonnaise jerky - not so good
3. Very few foods are naturally fuzzy.
4. Very few foods are naturally fizzy.
5. Green ketchup - kicky. Green mustard - not so kicky
6. Don't eat at any place called "Sam n' Ella's Good Time Cafe"
7. Don't eat any animal or fruit you've recently farked.
8. There is no such thing as "Doggie fudge".
9. Uncooked fish should not be spreadable.
10. Toe-fu Tofu.
